Tuna Box Project

• 3rd and 4th period math classes

The goal of the project is to create a box that
will hold three 6-ounce cans of tuna.

Students received instructions and rubrics.

In their groups, they discussed various shapes
for their boxes.

Each group created nets for three differently
shaped boxes.

Groups calculated surface area and volume for
each net.

The group then chose one net to use to build the
box. They transferred the net to a large piece of
paper, adding glue tabs.

Students transferred the box pattern to poster
paper. Then they cut out the poster paper to make
a box.

The groups then decorated the box and developed
advertisements for their tuna product.

Students evaluated group members and rated their
performance.

The whole grade voted on the most creative boxes.
