Title: CO: TES-MOPITT Comparisons
1CO TES-MOPITT Comparisons monthly
means
- Ming Luo
- September 2006
- MOPITT Data Provided by the MOPITT Team
2- Comparisons are made at two pressure levels for
four typical months - Lower troposphere 681 hPa (TES) and 700 hPa
(MOPITT). - Mid troposphere 511 hPa (TES) and 500 hPa
(MOPITT). - Oct 2005, Jan, Apr, and July 2006.
- Data screen
- TES typical QA flags including excluding scenes
with large cloud OD/variability. - MOPITT cloud free, day/night average with a
priori fraction lt 50. - Bin boxes
- TES 30Lat X 100 Lon, weighted inversely by
distance. - MOPITT 10Lat X 10 Lon.

12Conclusion
- Good agreement in global patterns, e.g., known
biomass burning and heavy pollution sources for
CO and the seasonal variability. - Known artifacts to the maps
- Relative to MOPITT, TES is under sampled with
much larger bin box, leading to much smoothed CO
maps, e.g., smaller maximum CO values. - The influence of a priori information in both TES
and MOPITT retrieved CO data Largest in lower
and upper troposphere, e.g., TES CO patterns in
Oct, Jan Apr MOPITT day/night differences.
