Animals of Vietnam

• There are many types of large mammals such as
  Elephants, Deer, Bears, Tigers and Leopards.
• Small animals can be Monkeys, Squirrels, Otters,
  and Hares.
• There are also many birds and reptiles like
  Crocodiles, Lizards and Snakes.
• In southern Vietnam alone 600 land and water
  birds have been identified.
• Domesticated Animals include Cattle, Dogs, Cats,
  Goats, Ducks, and Chickens.

Some Extinct or Threatened Animals

• Several types of Rhinocerous Have not been seen
  in Vietnam since 1940
• Indian Bison Hunted for meat and used for a
  draft animal
• Clouded Leopard Hunted for pelts and has lost
  its habitat to agriculture
• Tiger Loss of habitat, hunted for its pelt, for
  sport hunting, used in traditional Asian
  medicines, and also deliberate killing because of
  fear by humans and animals.
• Several Otter Species
• Sun bear or dog bear hunted for pets, used on
  the black market, and for meat

Plants in Vietnam

• The vegetation of Vietnam is rich and
  diversified.
• The forests of Vietnam can be divided into two
  broad categories
• evergreen forests
• deciduous forests
• There are more than 1,500 species of woody plants
  in Vietnam
• hardwoods ebony, teak
• Palms
• mangroves,
• bamboos
• There are also woody vines and herbaceous plants.
  
• Rain forests are relatively limited.
• Pure forest types are the pinesthe three-needled
  pine and the two-needled pine found in the upland
  and mangrove forests by the coastal areas

• A large part of the forest in the central
  highlands is dense and rich in broad-leaved
  evergreens and semi-evergreens
• There is a problem here with over logging. Some
  of this region still is composed of undisturbed
  (primary) forests.
• Cogon grass is commonly found in the forests,
  and savannas occupy large areas formerly covered
  by forests.
• Grass and sedge swamps are characteristic of the
  Thap Muoi Plain (Plain of Reeds), a depression in
  the Mekong River delta.
• During the Vietnam War, herbicides were used by
  the U.S. Army to defoliate large areas of forest
  in southern Vietnam. Most of these forests have
  been regenerating, however, and resettlement
  programs and illegal logging appear to have
  created longer-lasting damage.
