Title: HUMMINGBIRD
1 HUMMINGBIRD MIGRATION
2THE TUNDRA
"Wow I've never migrated before this is going to
be fun. "You've never migrated? I'll help tell
you about some of the things we will see during
the migration. By the way I'm toasty what's your
name?" "My names butter so where are we going
to start?" "Well, we start in Anchorage
Alaska and we go to Quito Ecuador." "it sure
is cold here"
3 "Yes, that's because the first few days we are
in the tundra biome. Here it is cold and barren.
The flat ground is not very suitable for plants
and the growing period is very short so only low
shrubs and plants with shallow roots can survive
here. The average annual temperature is 10 to 2 0
degrees F. "That's cool! Get it toasty that's
COOL! Hey what's that?" "Oh that's a snowy owl.
He's one of the types of animals that live here.
some of the others are arctic foxes, hawks,
wolverines, weasels and along the coast polar
bears."
4Taiga
"well I'm just wondering but when is it going to
get warmer" "Well its the beginning of the
second week so we should be in Canada by now and
in the taiga biome" "And that means?" "Here
the climate is still cold. The temperature for
half the year is below freezing and the other
half is sunny, warm, and humid. The total yearly
precipitation in the taiga is 12 - 33
inches. Most of the trees there are ever greens
(coniferous) so that as soon as it gets warm they
already have there leaves and can start
photosynthesis right away."
5"Hey look a rabbit lets go say hi to him. Hey
rabbit, yew hoo! "SHHH I'm hiding" "From....."
"A lynx! I cant talk now." "There are lynx here
are there other animals too" "YES now go away"
"Well, that was a friendly rabbit. What other
kinds of animals are there?" "Well, for
example, there are squirrels, moose, hawk owls,
red throated loons, and elk." ...
6Temperate forest
"La La LA" "Will you stop singing, all of a
sudden your not freezing and now for the last
week you've been singing." "Hum yup...well Im
still cold. So where are we?" "Well we are some
where in Washington or Oregon" "Hey its raining.
No Im going to get cold again! Toasty are you
cold?" "Yes" "Then whys your name toasty?"
7"Ugh... well anyways we are in the temperate
forest now. Here they get 30 to 60 inches of
precipitation per year. The annual average
temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The plants
there are deciduous and include maple oak birch
elm and ash trees." "Well what types of animals
are there?" "some of the are black bears, bald
eagles, deer, coyotes, and squirrels."...
8Chaparral
"Well its the fifth week so where are we
now?" "Some where in California" "So we are
close?" "Um no we have 4 weeks left, but you can
stay here if you want" "Well what's it like
here?" "During the winter the average temperature
is 50 degrees Fahrenheit and in the summer
average from 80 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The
terrain varies, there are flat planes rocky hills
and mountain slopes. Its vary hot and dry here."
9"Well I can see that but at least its warm."
"Yes, well the animals here to have adapted to
the heat. Most of the animals can live in the
desert like these animals coyotes, black-tailed
jackrabbit, grey fox, rattler snakes and
quail. " "Well maybe ill just go with
you" "drat" "what was that" "I'm just
kidding"...
10Desert
"Ugh (pant)... its hot! Where in there world
are we now?" "The desert most likely so some
where in lower California or upper Mexico" "Why
is it so hot?" "The desert's temperature by day
can get up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and at night
down in the 40s or 50s. The desert is also very
dry and not vary humid. Deserts soil is not rich
in nutrients and most of the time is sand. The
plants that live here are ones that do not need
much water like cactus and brush."
11"What animal would ever want to live in a place
like this?" "Actually some of the animals are
Gila monster, kangaroo rat, roadrunner,
sidewinder, tarantula, coyote, and the
jackrabbit" "So how many more weeks" "Two and
they'll be in the rainforest" "is it as hot as
here" "Nope" "Then lets hurry and get there"
12Rainforest
"The rain forest has been nice and there's lots
of flowers too." "Yup, the rainforest has an
abundant supply of plants because of the wet and
humid climate. The average temperature is about
75 degrees Fahrenheit and warm because of how
close it is to the equator. Rainforests also have
the largest variety of trees than any other area
in the world and the average rain fall here is 50
to 260 inches yearly." "Wow that's a lot of
rain! Hey look a snake, lets go ask it some
questions" "Hello snake I'm butter. I was just
wondering what your doing?" "I'm looking's for
lunch" "What would that be?" "Lizards and young
birds." "ohhhhh.....uh well i need to go now"
13"Why didn't you tell me that that snake ate
birds?" "There are so many animals and snakes
here I don't know what eats what! I'm not a
freeken genus." "You can say that again" "Well at
least i know some of the animals that live
here" "Like what?" "There's macaws, sloths,
chameleons, vipers, bats, jaguars, toucans and
monarch butterflies... Hey we're
here!" "Where?" "In Ecuador, duh" "well thanks
for helping me get here" "Your welcome" "Bye
now" "Wait I still don't know why your names
toasty if your cold. Hello ... darn he's gone! Oh
well."
