Tigers
  • Mystery, courage, fierceness, these are the
characteristics of the biggest cat of them all,
the tiger. Seven types of tigers roam various
    parts of Asia.

3
Tigers
  • The largest is the Siberian tiger, which can be
more than ten feet long and weigh more then 6oo
pounds. No two or more tigers have the same
stripes in the same way. Just like humans dont
have the same patterns in their fingertips.

4
Tigers
  • Although a tigers stripes look colorful and bold
they actually help the animal hide because the
stripes help blend in the tall plants in its
    environment.

5
Tigers
  • Tigers live in Asia, China, India and Africa.
Also they live in forest and swamps with dense
ground vegetation.. They also live in grass
jungles, tropical forests and mangrove swamps.

6
Tigers
  • Tigers also like to live around water. They have
been recorded easily swimming across rivers
achieving distances of just under twenty miles.

7
Tigers
  • Tigers eat a lot of meat. They consume anywhere
from 35-90 pounds of meat at one sitting. They
eat deer and pig, but they also eat, crocodiles,
young elephants, rhinos, monkeys, birds, fish,
leopards, bears, and even their own kind. Between
dusk and dawn they hunt and bury it under the
ground to save for another meal.

8
Tigers
A big hungry tiger can eat about 100 pounds of
meat at one sitting. This is about one fifth of
its total weight. That would be like 10 year old
human eating 40 hamburgers in one meal..A tiger
has to eat a lot because it often goes several
days without eating anything.
9

Tigers
  • Tiger cubs are born into a world that can be very
hard. They may be killed by other animals while
    their mother is hunting.

10

Tigers
  • At 18 months to two years old they leave their
mother to find their own territory. There they
will spend most of their life, hunting and living
    alone.

11

Tigers
  • At the beginning of this century, India alone
had over 40,000 tigers. By the 1970s there were
    barely7,000 wild tigers left.

12

Tigers
  • But people began to realize that these
magnificent creatures are valuable to mankind.

13

Tigers
  • So India and other countries created preserves
Large territories set aside just for animals.

14

Tigers
  • Tigers hunt there. Prey is abundant and people
watch their progress with concern and awe.

  • We would like to thank our fifth grade helpers
    Marlyn and William.
