• Prepare under-served students for admission and
  success in college preparatory programs
• Inspire and recruit top-ranked, diverse high
  school and college students to enter the teaching
  profession

GOALS

• 25 sites in 16 states and Hong Kong
• 2,500 middle school students (grades 5-9)
  annually
• 750 talented high school and college students
  serve as summer teachers

The Breakthrough Collaborative At a Glance

• Is a cross-age, cross-cultural experience
• Targets highly motivated, under-served middle
  school students in grades 5-9
• Is academically rigorous
• Has an overall 31 student-teacher ratio (71 in
  classroom)
• Intensive 6-week summer and Saturday program
• Is tuition-free
• Provides professional mentorship and training for
  student teachers

THE PROGRAM

• 83 of students enroll in and complete
  academic-track high school
• 72 of young teachers enter the teaching
  profession
• 57 of summer faculty are educators of color
  (compared to 13 of teachers nationwide)

  (Program is enrichment rather than remedial)
• Recruited from under-privileged urban areas

• Teachers are rising high school juniors through
  recent college graduates
• Minimum age of 16
• Assigned one of four core subject areas
• Math
• Science
• History
• Writing Through Literature
• Complete classroom environment
• Lesson plans
• Exams
• Parent-teacher conferences
• Evaluation/Report Cards
• No experience required
• First week is devoted to teacher training

Course Load

• 2 academic core courses
• Average class size 6 students
• 1 academic elective
• Opportunity to design own elective course
• Past electives include Latin, French, Debate,
  Cincinnati Reds Baseball History
• Additional art or athletic elective course
• Painting, Sculpture, Running to Fitness,
  Swimming, etc.
