1The Civil Rights Movement
- Segregation
- Plessy vs. Fergeson (1896)- This Sepreme Court
case legalized segregation. Although Blacks
could be separated from Whites by law, they had
to be equal (I.e. separate but equal). However,
Black facilities like schools were never equal.
2- Blacks were segregated from schools, public
toilets, restraunts, even hotels. - If Blacks refused to obey segregation codes they
were usually lynched for their upity attitude. - Example 14 Blacks were lynched by a Mississippi
mob because the Black men made sexual comments
about a White woman
3 B. Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955)- After refusing
to move to the back of the bus, Rosa Parks was
arrested for violating Jim Crow laws.
4 C. Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka,
Kansas (1954)- This Supreme Court ruling
overturned Plessy Fergeson. In the Deep South
massive resistance was organized to prevent
Blacks frok attending White schools. 10 years
later, less than 2 of Blacks in the South were
integrated.
5 D. Crisis at Little Rock (1957)- After the Brown
Vs. Board of Education Tokpeka, Kansas ruling,
schools were forced top be integrated. However,
the governor of Arkansas (Orval Faubus) called
out the National Guard to prevent Black students
from enrolling at Central High in Little
Rock. E. Sit-Ins- In 1960, 4 Black college
students in Greensboro, North Carolina sat down
at the white section of a restraunt. The
sit-in movement spread like wildfire.
6- II. The Struggle for Civil Rights durring the
1960s - Freedom Rides- During the early 1960s
interracial groups (whites and blacks) from the
North would travel on buses to the South. These
buses were sometimes bombed or burned. - March on Washington (1963)- In order to promote
the proposed new Civil Rights laws, Martin Luther
King Jr. leads over 200,000 people to Washington
D.V. King then delivers his famous I have a

7 C. Voter-Registration Campaign- This campaign
was led by Martin Luther King Jr. and the SLCC
(Southern Christian Leadership Conference) in
order to get more Blacks to vote. Only 5 of
eligible Blacks w3ere registered to vote. III.
The Black Power Movement A. Setting Many
African-American leaders were frustrated with
Kings turn the other cheek non-violent
Christian campaign. These new leaders wanted
immediate action even it meant violence. B.
Malcom X- Black militants were inspired by Malcom
X the spokesman for the Nation of Islam. Malcom X
distanced himself from Elijah Mohammed ( the
leader of Black Muslims) because Malcom watned to
follow mainstream Islam
8C. Stokely Carmichael and the Black Panther
Party- Abonded peaceful resistance and called for
Black Power.
9- Blacks in Sports and Music
- Wilt Chamberlin- One of the greatest centers in
basketball (Next to Clark, of course). Once he
scored 100 points in a single game.
10- Jackie Robinson- Broke the so called race
barrier by becoming the first African-American
to compete in major league baseball.
11- Chuck Berry- Famous for his rock and roll hits,
Maybvellene and Roll over Beethoven.ms
