- As the empire grew, roads were needed to move
armies and assist with trade.
Notice how durable and long-lasting these roads
are. Remember that this road is almost 2,000
years old!

- Aqueduct waterway built to bring fresh water
into a city.

- Colosseum Located in Rome, the largest and most
famous stadium in the world where games were
played.

The Romans even filled the Colosseum with water
and staged large battles with ships.

Gladiator fights these warriors were usually
criminals forced to fight in bloody contests or
fights with animals such as lions or bears.

- Romans copied Greek temples very closely.
Why do you think they did this?
Most likely it was because they revered the
Greeks as the greatest civilization before they
arrived. Remember that they also borrowed all of
the Greek gods and goddesses.

- Julius Caesar changed the calendar to 12 months
and 30 or 31 days except for February.
Notice the names of the months on this pillar
(Mensis means month)

- March Mars, the Roman God of War
- April derived from aperire, Latin to open, as
in opening buds and blossoms - May Maia, Roman goddess

- September septem, Latin for 7, the 7th month
of the Roman calendar - October octo, Latin for 8, the 8th month of
the Roman calendar - November novem, Latin for 9, their 9th month
