What is a hurricane?
  • A hurricane is a powerful storm with heavy rains
    and winds that are 74 miles per hour or more.
    The wind rotates in a circular motion.
  • The center of the storm is called the eye of a
    hurricane.

Hurricanes have names
  • All hurricanes are all given names. The Atlantic
    Ocean hurricanes, the World Meteorological
    Organization has six lists of names. Each year a
    different list is used. The same names are reused
    every 6 years.
  • Hurricanes names are no longer used if they cause
    a great deal of damage.

Here are few of the names that can be used this
year include Arlene , Cindy , Rita, Katrina,
Vince and Stan.

  • Hurricanes start off as tropical storm. As the
    winds gain speed over 74 miles per hour it
    becomes a hurricane.
  • Hurricanes have five different categories they
    are classified into based on their wind speed.

Category 1 -- Winds 74-95 miles per hour
Category 2-- Winds 96-110 miles per hour
Category 3 -- Winds 111-130 miles per hour
Category 4 -- Winds 131-155 miles per hour
Category 5 -- Winds greater than 155 miles per
hour
