What is a hurricane?

• A hurricane is a violent, tropical, cyclonic
  storm of the western north Atlantic, having wind
  speeds of or in excess of 72 mph.

How are Hurricanes produced?

• First, The Indian ocean must be more than 80
  degrees
• Second, winds come together and force the air
  upward.
• Third, winds split and allow the air below to go
  up
• Fourth, humid air makes clouds.
• Last, Winds from the outside cause the hurricane
  to move and grow

Hurricane Classifications

• Hurricanes are classified by their wind speed.
• Category One -- Winds 74-95 miles per hour
• Category Two -- Winds 96-110 miles per hour
• Category Three -- Winds 111-130 miles per hour
• Category Four -- Winds 131-155 miles per hour
• Category Five -- Winds greater than 155 miles per
  hour (rare)
• Katrina is an example of a category five.

Where/when do hurricanes occur in the United
States?

• Hurricanes form and intensify over oceanic
  regions. They require sea-surface temperatures of
  at least 26C (80F) and the influence of the
  earths rotation to initiate a spinning
  circulation (Coriolis effect)

Why are Hurricanes considered severe weather?

• Hurricanes are classified as severe weather
  because they can destroy houses, cities, and they
  can cause floods.
• The floods can carry away belongings and destroy
  homes.
• They can cause loss of power and strand people in
  the middle of the storm.
