5Traffic Safety Education
- Educating the general driving pubic in anything
has and will always be a slow and challenging
task - Many respected agencies across the nation have
surrendered to the thought that driver behavior
cannot be changed by education
6Traffic Safety Education
- Ever since the DeKalb Study in 1974 Drivers
Education has taking a back seat to the other 3
Es of Traffic Safety - That all changed on January 23, 2003 in Belgrade,
Montana. - On that day, 3 teens and their drivers ed
instructor were all killed when their vehicle
lost control on an icy rural road and collided
with a tractor trailer
7Traffic Safety Education
- By October 2003 the NTSB held a public forum on
Driver Education - The NTSB then concluded that there should be some
kind of National Standard or Best Practices for
Drivers Education - And now with an act of Congress, NHTSA has been
charged with undertaking this task
8Traffic Safety Education
- As a result of this mandate, on May 7th 8th,
two of my DSAA colleagues and I will travel to
Washington DC to meet with the NHTSA consulting
firm along with a select group of traffic safety
officials across the U.S. - The Objective of this meeting to develop a
consensus of national standards for driver
education
9Creating Best Practices
- Data Driven Training
- Greater focus on BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION
- Increase behind the wheel portion of driver
education to a standard of at least 10 hours - Visual Scanning Skills
