Who We Are

• The Blackmon Road Community (BRC) is one of the
  poorest communities in South Carolina
• The residents of Blackmon Road, about twenty
  families containing 75-100 people, live without
  indoor plumbing, bathrooms or showers, without
  trash pick-up, without paved roads, and without
  street lights effectively, without the basic
  material necessities.
• They need the kinds of infrastructural supports,
  educational programming, and psychological
  empowerment that will provide them with the
  self-esteem and community-building activities to
  truly believe that their lives can be different,
  that they can be anything they want to be in this
  world through commitment, hard work, dedication,
  and an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams.

• They need the kinds of infrastructural supports,

  and an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Hopes Story

• Hope Whitlock, eighty-one years old, is the
  inspiration for A Place for Hope's name. Mrs.
  Whitlock was raised the daughter of Chester
  sharecroppers.
• Mrs. Whitlock is the mother of seven, who came to
  Rock Hill more than three decades ago.
• Her four-room home was built by hand by her late
  husband. Ripped screens, broken glass, rust, and
  roosters are the landscape today
• Hope's home is the heart of the Blackmon Road
  community, where folks in need stop for a hot
  meal, or a drink of water, or a moment's rest.

A Place For Hope History

• A Place for Hope was envisioned by Donna Berry as
  a community care and resource center to address
  the physical, educational, and empowerment needs
  of the neighborhood residents of the Blackmon
  Road Community
• Supported and run through the efforts of
  volunteers, private partnerships, and public
  donations,
• The Center officially opened Thanksgiving Day
  2001. Receiving official 501(C) 3 status as a
  non-profit, tax exempt, charitable organization
  in 2003, the center was able to expand its
  primary function of providing food and clothing
  to include educational and developmental
  resources as well.

• The Centers commitment to providing education
  and job skills training enabled York County and
  Catawba Regional Council of Governments to secure
  a community development block grant in September
  2005.
• The 500,000 grant is administered by York County
  under the guidance of the Blackmon Road Community
  Builders, which is inclusive of Blackmon Rd.
  community leaders. The grant provides for the
  laying of water and sewer lines in the
  neighborhood.
• The partnership between local government,
  non-governmental organizations, and local banks
  and businesses will help A Place for Hope reach
  its goal of becoming a sustainable community
  resource center.
• This partnership will also help A Place for Hope
  provide for the needs of the Blackmon Road
  community, works toward the empowerment of its
  citizens, and serves as a catalyst for social and
  material change, its ultimate goal.

Donations

• Holiday Angel Tree Gift Exchange Celebration
  provides resources for annual holiday gift
  exchange in which individuals can buy gifts/gift
  cards for a child or family, or contribute
  resources for the center
• Hope Scholarship for Personal Enrichment-
  provides tuition and related transportation costs
  for residents to attend adult education programs
  or personal enrichment classes at local area
  schools and agency organizations.
• Kerosene and Winter Heating Assistance Program
  provides for the purchase of kerosene, heaters,
  and gas cans for distribution to residents.

• Cash Donations Cash donations are used to
  support operating costs, infrastructure, and
  programming
•  General Budget and Operating Expenses provides
  resources for center utility bills, center staff
  salary, and the purchase of needed technological
  educational tools/supplies

• DIRECTIONS FROM WINTHROP UNIVERSITY

  Ave, head away from Cherry Rd. towards downtown
• 2Turn Left onto White St and continue straight
  for 1-2 miles.
• 3Turn Right onto Albright/SC72 (Eckerd will be
  on your right).
• 4Continue until you pass Harley Davidson store
  on LEFT
• 5Turn Left onto Blackmon Street beside Terminex
  Exterminating. (this is a gravel road).
• 6Turn Right onto Joe Louis Blvd.
