  • Moses Austin (Missouri businessman)
  • Given a land grant by Mexican Govt.

  • Son, Stephen Austin took over project of settling

  • Sold land for 12 ½ cents/acre
  • 1832 20,000 settlers

Tension between Texans and Mexican Govt.
  • Mexican Govt. did not allow slavery, but many
    settlers brought their slaves with them
  • Settlers were told that they were allowed to
    settle if they became Catholics, but many refused
    to join the Catholic Church
  • Mexico City was a long way away, so it was hard
    to enforce the Mexican rules
  • Texans outnumbered Mexicans
  • Texans wanted more say in the way they were
    governed
