What to Look For When You Read a Book, And How
to Talk About It to Others
  • What is the book about? Is it historical fiction,
    science fiction, realistic fiction, or
    non-fiction?
  • If the book is a work of fiction, can you follow
the plot easily or does the story wander all over
the place? If the book is non-fiction, is the
sequence of events easy to understand?
  • Are all of the characters well developed? Does it
matter to your enjoyment of the book if they are
    not?
  • If the book is about a particular cultural group,
does it present this group in an unbiased
fashion will this book hurt people because of
    its stereotypes?
  • When you talk about the book at a Tiger Readers
Book Club meeting, or fill out a Tiger Readers
Book club bookmark, here are some things to
    remember
  • Summarize the story or content of the book in a
few brief sentences. Dont tell every last
    detail.
  • Spend some time telling how the book affected
you. How did it make you feel? Why did you like
    it or not like it?
  • How does the book compare to others that may be
similar or by the same author?
  • If the book is illustrated, evaluate the quality
    of the illustrations.
  • Would you recommend the book to others? Who else
    might enjoy it?
