Introduction
I. Geography
Mount Jade (3952m)

• Total area of nearly 36,000 sq. km. The
  island of Taiwan is roughly shaped like a tobacco
  leaf. It is 394 km long and 144 km broad at its
  widest point. Taiwan is separated from the
  Chinese mainland by the Taiwan Strait, which is
  about 220 km at its widest point and 130 km at
  its narrowest.
• The central of Taiwan is the high
  mountains running from the north to the south of
  the island. It includes the island's tallest peak
  -- 3,952m Mount Jade.
• The shoreline of Taiwan is simple and
  fairly straight. The total length is 1,566 km .

II. People
The population of Taiwan stood at
22.14 million in 1999. With it now approaching 23
million in 2000, the population density of the
Taiwan area was the second highest in the world
after Bangladesh. Taipei City, the capital, which
covers 272 sq. km, is Taiwan's most crowded urban
area with 9,560 persons per square km.
As well as Chinese, we have..
aboriginal people in Taiwan!!!! In 1997,
the number of aboriginal people in the Taiwan
area was just over 389,900. There are currently
nine major tribes in Taiwan Province the Atayal,
Saisiyat, Bunun, Tsou, Paiwan, Rukai, Puyuma,
Ami, and Yami.

III. Language
Written Chinese, which has historically
provided a link amongst the various Chinese
dialects, is unique in that it is the only major
modern writing system that uses thousands of
semantically meaningful characters rather than a
phonetic alphabet or a few dozen symbols.
The traditional Chinese writing system
has influenced other writing systems of East
Asia, and Chinese characters are still used
extensively in modern Japanese and in modern
Korean (less).
More people speak a Chinese language
(Mandarin) natively. Mandarin, the national
language Taiwan and of the Chinese mainland, is
based on the Peking dialect. Also we
have 2 other main dialects, Fujianese and Hakka
in Taiwan. But no matter which dialect they speak
natively, they share the same writing system. It
is the same situation between Mandarin and
Cantonese. This also explains why a speaker of
one dialect may not be able to understand what a
speaker of another dialect says, but can still
understand what that person writes.

History of Taiwan
They were struck by the tremendous beauty of its
green mountains rising steeply out of the cobalt
waters of the Pacific and named the island
Formosa(beautiful island).
Portuguese navigators (1579)
The next Europeans to occupy Taiwan were the
Dutch. The Dutch East India Company established a
military base first on Penghu in 1622.
Dutch rule(1622)
Chinese immigration
Thousands of people, especially from the coastal
provinces of Fujian (Fukien) and Guangdong, began
to migrate across the Taiwan Strait to the island
from the 17th century (Ming Dynasty).
Cheng chen-kung (Ming dynasty)
Cheng Cheng-kung claimed Taiwan from the Dutch in
1662 and chose Anping (present-day Tainan) as his
capital.
Japanese rule (1895 - 1945)
During its 50-year rule of Taiwan, Japan was
intent on building an industrial homeland and an
agricultural base in Taiwan.

Major events since the end of World War II Oct.
1945 Chiang-Kai-shek's troops (KMT) occupy
Taiwan Sep. 1986 DPP (Democratic Progressive
party) founded Dec. 1992 First democratic
legislative elections Mar. 1996 First direct
presidential elections Mar. 2000 Taiwan held
its second direct presidential elections.

Party candidate Chen Shui-bian won a stunning
victory, making it the first time
in Taiwan's history that an
opposition party has won over the entrenched KMT.
The March 2000 elections are thus a
"coming-of-age" for democracy in Taiwan!!!!!!

country as one of Asias four Little Dragons

Cross-Strait Relations
Cross-Strait Relations
Potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait still
poses a serious threat to world peace and
stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Even today,
when trade, business, and people-to-people
contacts between the two sides of the Taiwan
Strait are flourishing, the authorities on the
Chinese mainland have never renounced the use of
force against Taiwan.
In the future, the two sides should avoid the
use of force and instead apply the principles of
reason, peace and mutual benefit to improve the
cross-strait relationship and advance toward the
goal of uniting China under freedom, democracy.
Only in this way can Taipei and Beijing bring the
greatest possible benefit to the people on both
sides and contribute to the long-term peace and
stability of the East Asian region.

the political, economic, financial, and cultural
center of the Republic of China.
It has a thriving arts and academic scene
and countless modern commercial buildings. With
its vibrant cultural and economic growth, it has
become a modern international metropolis.

To me, Taipei is a city with different faces. A
place where you can explore and have fun from
down till dusk. I will show you by telling you
one day of standard weekend life in Taipei.

take bus again to Taipei train station meeting my
friends and start shopping / 15PM Take cab to
Warners Village for a latest movie / 17PM Meet
more friends go to CASH BOX for KTV / 21PM
Take metro to Shilin Night Market for the late
dinner / 23PM Go home? No, of cause not.now we
have to choose which club to go, Kiss? _at_live?
Edge or HR?/ 2AMGo home? no.we will go to the
nearby Tea shop for playing card, chat and hang
around./ or we can go play bowling/ 4AM yeap,
It is the time to go home. But before that, you
can also go to the soybean restaurant for your
early breakerfast.Believe me, its opened
already.

Local Committees
AIESEC in Taiwan is composed by students from 14
universities throughout the island. We also have
a Member Committee elected once a year by the
general assembly to manage and coordinate our
efforts in Taiwan.
We facilitate 6 exchanges in 9899. Now we are
increasing support from students and businesses,
now we have 33 students and 8 companies joining
our international traineeship exchange program.

The University consists of six colleges,
including the colleges of Liberal Arts, Sciences,
Engineering, Management, Marine Sciences,
comprising of fourteen undergraduate departments
and 28 graduate institutes. The total enrollment
of students during the current academic year is
5196 including graduate students.

Kaohsiung, with a population exceeding
1.5 million, has become Taiwan's second largest
city and the nation's greatest industrial zone.
Worldwide, it ranks as one of the ten largest
overall sea harbors.
