2What is the No Child Left Behind Act ?
- The federal No Child Left Behind Act of
2001 (NCLB), a major reform of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act (ESEA), was passed by
Congress and signed into law by President Bush on
January 8, 2002. - NCLB redefines the federal role in K-12
education and seeks to help close the achievement
gap between - disadvantaged,
- Limited English,
- special education, and
- minority students.

26Reversing Order of School Improvement Sanctions
- Request
- Virginia will allow schools the flexibility to
reverse the order of sanctions in the first two
years of school improvement. - Supplemental educational services may be offered
to eligible students attending Title I schools in
improvement in the first year. - Public school choice is offered in the second
year.

- For 2005-06, Virginia was the only state in the
nation to participate in the SES/choice reversal
