The Pyramids at Giza have marked the desert west
of the branching of the Nile into its delta for
more than 4500 years. The Pyramids mark as
well the belief of the ancient Egyptians in
eternal life and their desire for eternal homes
in tune with the cosmos. The Pyramids connect
earth and sky as well as the homes of worlds
mortal and divine.

Thebes The southern Egyptian town of Thebes has
been inhabited for at least 6000 years, but only
under the Pharaoh Montuhotep II (2055-2004 BCE)
did Thebes become a major ritual and
administrative center for the Kingdom of the Two
Lands. From that time forward, the site of
pharaonic burials shifted from the pyramids of
the West Bank at Memphis to the West Bank area
across the Nile from Thebes. Thebes is today
known as Luxor, after the Muslim name for the
village Al-Uqsur, the Palaces.
