Principle Governing Playing and Practice Seasons
  • NCAA Constitution 2.14The time required of
    student-athletes for participation in
    intercollegiate athletics shall be regulated to
    minimize interference with their opportunities
    for acquiring a quality education in a manner
    consistent with that afforded the general student
    body.

Countable Athletically Related Activities
  • Formerly a laundry list, deregulated for 8/1/03.
  • Any required activity with an athletics purpose
    involving student-athletes at the direction of or
    supervised by one or more of an institution's
    coaching staff (including strength and
    conditioning coaches).
  • Administrative activities (e.g., academic
    meetings, compliance meetings) shall not be
    considered as countable athletically related
    activities.
  • Educational materials developed by the 20/8-Hour
    Working Group are available on the NCAA Web site
    (athletics administrator home page on the old
    site).

  • Maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Maximum of four hours per day.
  • Exception for golf practice rounds May exceed
    the four hours per day, but must stay within 20
    hours per week.

  • The total in all sports may not exceed 20 hours
    per week.

  • Limited to eight hours per week with not more
    than two hours of individual skill instruction.
  • Two days off per week.
  • Only required weight training, conditioning and
    individual skill instruction permitted.

Individual Skill Instruction Outside Playing
Season
  • Sports other than football and mens basketball
    and womens basketball
  • Two hours per week.
  • Not more than four student-athletes at any one
    time at any facility.
  • Football
  • Viewing of game film only (no skill instruction).
  • Two hours per week.
  • Mens Basketball
  • No limitations on the number of student-athletes
    who may be involved in individual or team skill
    instruction and
  • All athletically related activities outside the
    playing season are prohibited one week prior to
    the beginning of the final examination period
    through the conclusion of each student-athlete's
    final exams.

  • More than four student-athletes from the team may
    be involved in skill-related instruction with
    their coaches.
  • Student-athletes may not participate in more than
    four hours of skill instruction per week outside
    of the playing season

Limitations
  • Competition day equals three hours.
  • No practice after competition.
  • Week is any seven consecutive days.
  • Day is 1201 a.m. to midnight.
  • Do not apply to preseason.
  • Do not apply to vacation periods during the
    playing season.
  • Do apply to final exam periods.

Time LimitsRequired Day Off During Playing Season
  • Countable athletically related activities (CARA)
    are prohibited one calendar day per week during
    the playing season (postseason exception).
  • Travel day may be considered day off, provided no
    CARA take place.
  • Not required during preseason practice prior to
    first day of classes or first contest (whichever
    is earlier).

Missed Class Time
  • Student-athletes may not miss class time for
    practice, except in conjunction with an
    away-from-home contest.
  • Exception for institution hosting NCAA
    championship.

Voluntary Athletically Related Activities
  • No requirement to report back to coach/staff
    information related to the activity
  • Activity must be initiated and requested solely
    by the student-athlete
  • Attendance/participation may not be recorded for
    the purposes of reporting the information to
    coaches or other student-athletes
  • No penalty for electing not to participate in
    activity and
  • No recognition can be provided for participation.
