3Principle Governing Playing and Practice Seasons
- NCAA Constitution 2.14The time required of
student-athletes for participation in
intercollegiate athletics shall be regulated to
minimize interference with their opportunities
for acquiring a quality education in a manner
consistent with that afforded the general student
body.

- Formerly a laundry list, deregulated for 8/1/03.
- Any required activity with an athletics purpose
involving student-athletes at the direction of or
supervised by one or more of an institution's
coaching staff (including strength and
conditioning coaches). - Administrative activities (e.g., academic
meetings, compliance meetings) shall not be
considered as countable athletically related
activities. - Educational materials developed by the 20/8-Hour
Working Group are available on the NCAA Web site
(athletics administrator home page on the old
site).

7Time LimitsHour Limitations Playing Season
- Maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Maximum of four hours per day.
- Exception for golf practice rounds May exceed
the four hours per day, but must stay within 20
hours per week. - Multisport Participants.
- The total in all sports may not exceed 20 hours
per week.
8Time LimitsHour Limitations Outside Playing
Season
- Limited to eight hours per week with not more
than two hours of individual skill instruction. - Two days off per week.
- Only required weight training, conditioning and
individual skill instruction permitted. - Skill instruction can be required.
- Conditioning drills
- May simulate game activities
- May not set up offensive or defensive alignments
- May not use equipment related to sport (except
for skates in hockey). - In swimming and diving, a student-athlete may be
involved in in-pool conditioning activities and
swim-specific equipment (e.g., starting blocks,
kickboards, pull buoys) may be used.

Season
- No countable athletically related activities
permitted during vacation periods. - Department-wide strength and conditioning coaches
who are not countable coaches may design/conduct
VOLUNTARY workouts during vacation periods.
10Individual Skill Instruction Outside Playing
Season
- Sports other than football and mens basketball
and womens basketball - Two hours per week.
- Not more than four student-athletes at any one
time at any facility. - Football
- Viewing of game film only (no skill instruction).
- Two hours per week.
- Mens Basketball
- No limitations on the number of student-athletes
who may be involved in individual or team skill
instruction and - All athletically related activities outside the
playing season are prohibited one week prior to
the beginning of the final examination period
through the conclusion of each student-athlete's
final exams.

Season
- Womens Basketball
- More than four student-athletes from the team may
be involved in skill-related instruction with
their coaches. - Student-athletes may not participate in more than
four hours of skill instruction per week outside
of the playing season

Limitations
- Competition day equals three hours.
- No practice after competition.
- Week is any seven consecutive days.
- Day is 1201 a.m. to midnight.
- Do not apply to preseason.
- Do not apply to vacation periods during the
playing season. - Do apply to final exam periods.
13Time LimitsRequired Day Off During Playing Season
- Countable athletically related activities (CARA)
are prohibited one calendar day per week during
the playing season (postseason exception). - Travel day may be considered day off, provided no
CARA take place. - Not required during preseason practice prior to
first day of classes or first contest (whichever
is earlier).
14Time Limits Required Day Off During Playing
Season
- Vacation day may be considered day off.
- Not required during one conference championship.
- Not required during one postseason championship.
- Not required during NCAA championships, certified
bowl games, National Invitational Tournament. - May use cancelled contest day, under certain
conditions.
15Missed Class Time
- Student-athletes may not miss class time for
practice, except in conjunction with an
away-from-home contest. - Exception for institution hosting NCAA
championship.
16Voluntary Athletically Related Activities
- No requirement to report back to coach/staff
information related to the activity - Activity must be initiated and requested solely
by the student-athlete - Attendance/participation may not be recorded for
the purposes of reporting the information to
coaches or other student-athletes - No penalty for electing not to participate in
activity and - No recognition can be provided for participation.
