Florida Lacrosse League championship on April 25,
    2009.

5
Safety and Security
  • Pre-competition physicals required this season
  • Must be completed prior to first practice
  • Lacrosse is a contact sport and at this level,
contact will be expected and stick checking will
be aggressive. Protective equipment and mouth
piece will be required at all times when on the
field for either practices or games. The coaches
will continue to communicate the importance of
    preparation and proper equipment.
  • Team injury policy will be strictly enforced
  • No member of the coaching staff is a doctor or
    licensed to practice medicine.

  • No member of the coaching staff is a doctor or
licensed to practice medicine nor did any of us
stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

7
Safety and Security
  • Team injury policy
  • Injuries are a part of the game, but must be
treated as soon as possible by qualified medical
personnel. In order for a player to be excused
from practice or a game for an injury, that
player must have a note from a doctor.
  • Once a player misses a full practice or a full
game (lost time injury), the player cannot return
to practice until cleared by a doctor.
  • A player who is injured is encouraged to come to
practice and either work on individual stick
skills (the wall) or try to pay attention to
the instruction given. However, if the player
becomes a distraction to other players or the
coaching staff, he will be asked to leave the
    practice field.

8
Safety and Security
  • Common medical issues
  • Commotio cordis
  • Sudden cardiac arrest, mitigated by use of AED
  • Concussion
  • Handoutsparents, coaches, players all need to be
    aware of the signs
  • Dehydration and heat related illnesses
  • Hydration begins 24 hours prior to an event
  • Communicable diseases and skin infection
  • Shower immediately after all practices/games
  • Wash all workout clothing after practice
  • Wash protective gear periodically
  • Dont share towels, personal hygiene products

9
Communication
  • PlayerTeamCoachesParents
  • Email is the primary source of communication
    between coaches parents
  • Text messages effective as primary source of
    communication between coaches and players
  • If a player has an issue, he should communicate
to his position coach, the head coach, and then
    to the program administrator
  • Parents should contact the head coach first,
    then the program administrator
  • Any injuries should be communicated to the head
    coach immediately, regardless of time
  • Please observe game day rule
  • Playing time communicationplayer to coach OR
player, parent and coach. Never coach and
    parent.
  • Head coach available nearly 24/7do not hesitate
to contact if there is an issue or a concern
    (outside of the parameters above).

10
Team Philosophy
  • FLC Keys to Success
  • Win the possession game
  • Face offs, ground balls, rides/clears, turnovers
  • Protect the house
  • Team defense, slides, communication, playing with
    sticks up
  • Balanced offense
  • Team offense, running the plays as practiced,
    discipline and patience
  • Beat opponents up and down the field
  • Hustle, odd man rushes, fast breaks, aggressive
    defense.

11
Team Philosophy
  • Players are evaluated on practice/game attendance
    and three things
  • Skills
  • Effort (hustle)
  • Attitude
  • Attendance plus 3 of 3 starter
  • Attendance plus 2 of 3 playing time
  • Attendance plus 1 of 3 struggling for a spot on
    the team

12
Team Philosophy
  • Playing Time
  • High school lacrosse is a competitive sport.
At this level, there are no guarantees of playing
    time to any players.
  • There are a number of factors that influence a
    players individual playing time attendance,
skills of the individual player, the players
understanding of the plays/schemes, skills of the
opposing players, game situation, time remaining,
    etc.
  • That said, the coaching staff is conscious of
playing time and will make every effort to
maximize a players playing time within the
    parameters above.
  • A players questions about playing time should be
first directed to his position coach AT ANY TIME
OTHER THAN GAME DAY. If the player is still not
satisfied, he may discuss with the head coach.
If a parent has a question about playing time,
the discussion must be a three way conversation
parent, player, coach. At no time will a coach
discuss playing time with a parent without the
    player present.

13
Team Philosophy
  • Attendance
  • Wednesday, January 21st is the official start of
    practice. Attendance at practice/games is
mandatory starting then unless excused in
    advance.
  • One unexcused absence in a week prior to a game
will cost 1 quarter of playing time (coachs
    discretion as to which quarter)
  • Two unexcused absences in a week prior to a game
will cost 2 quarters of playing time (coachs
discretion as to which 2 quarters)
  • Unexcused absence of a game will cost an
    additional game
  • Key is to communicate and request excusal in
advance from the head coach. Players will be
challenged, but excusal policy will be
reasonable. Coach has the final determination as
to whether absence is excused or not.

14
Team Philosophy
  • Sportsmanship
  • We have made improvement in this area from the
07 season, but we have a long way to go. There
were several incidents in our summer/fall play
that appear that we are regressing.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct fouls are a point of
emphasis with officials this year, particularly
    with regard to profane language
  • The WFLL has instituted a fine/suspension system
against coaches of players who have repeated
    unsportsmanlike conduct penalties
  • Last years team rule will continue any player
    who receives a 3 minute, non-releasable
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will sit out the
remainder of the game and could expect further
disciplinary action up to and including
suspension from future games. The coaching staff
reserves the right to invoke this penalty for ANY
unsportsmanlike penalty, regardless of time or
    releaseability of the penalty
  • Repeated incidents could result in longer
suspensions or dismissal from the team

15
Team Philosophy
  • Game Day
  • One of our goals this year is to increase the
game day experience for fans, parents, players,
    and coaches.
  • We have reached agreement to use the full
concession facility at the complex. This is a
great convenience for our team, but it will
    require some additional volunteer labor.
  • Be sure your son is aware of what time he needs
to be at the field. Once pre-game preparation
starts, the player is to remain with the team
until dismissed at the games conclusion.
