Title: Pesticide Protection for Critical Areas
1Pesticide Protection for Critical Areas
- Speakers notes
- Needed handout include.
- Fact sheet Keeping Herbicide out of Groundwater
and Surface Water. - And
- Form Pesticide Records Form (W/Examples)
- from MGSP website http//www.kbs.msu.edu/mgsp/Cro
pping_Systems.htm
Also needed are Pesticide labels for the
following pesticides AAtrex , Lumax,
Counter15Gr, Bicep Magnum, Sevin, Harness,
Harness Xtra, Hornet, and a few other pesticide
labels common to your area. They maybe printed
from http//www.cdms.net/manuf/default.asp
2Pesticide Protection for Critical Areas
- Crop A Syst Pest Management Section
- Lyndon Kelley MSU Extension
- District Groundwater Agent
- Kellogg Biological Station
3- How do you protect surface and ground water in
and near fields from pesticide contamination?
Pesticide labels with groundwater and surface
water advisory statements are followed.
- Weed Control Guide for Field Crops,E-434 , pg. 26
- Do not apply Axiom to permeable or
coarse-textured soils where the water table is
shallow as this may result in ground water
contamination. - Do not apply Axiom to sites that are vulnerable
to runoff and surface water contamination.
4.6 Pest Management Practices
4Pesticide Label Legal documentation agreed
upon between EPA and manufacture of pesticide
providing necessary information to applicator.
Name of product Environmental
Hazards Ingredient statement Type of
formulation Net contents
Precautionary statement Signal Word
Directions for use EPA Registration Number
First Aid Child hazard
warning Storage and Disposal
Re-entry Statement
Name address of manufacturer
5Pesticide Label
- Confers some liability to applicator.
- Creates a three party approach to pesticide use.
- ---- Registrant, Manufacture of product
- ---- Government, EPA MDA
- ---- Applicator, you or your crop pesticide
applicator
6Pesticide Certification Requirements
- Restricted Use Pesticide
- - Certification is required for purchase or
application. - - Applicator assume greater amount of liability
for the use. - - Product potentially more hazardous
- - Product has environmental restrictions
- - Product has leach or run-off potential

9- How do you protect surface and ground water in
and near fields from pesticide contamination?
Field maps indicating pesticide-labeled setbacks
and shallow groundwater restrictions are
followed.
- Weed Control Guide for Field Crops,E-434 , pg. 26
- Do not apply Axiom to permeable or
coarse-textured soils where the water table is
shallow as this may result in ground water
contamination. - Do not apply Axiom to sites that are vulnerable
to runoff and surface water contamination.
4.6 Pest Management Practices
10- Herbicide Groundwater Restriction Examples
- Do not mix, load or use within 150ft. of any well
without loading pad, unless well has been
properly plugged and abandoned. - Do not apply to following soils if groundwater
depth is 30 ft or less sands with less than 3
organic matter, loamy sands with less than 2
organic matter, or sandy loams with less than 1
organic matter. - Do not exceed 2.5 Lbs/acre application of
Atrazine in any calendar year
4.6 Pest Management Practices
11- Herbicide Restriction Surface Water - Examples
- Do not mix, load or use within 50ft. of any
intermittent stream or river. - Do not apply within 66 ft. of tile standpipe,
point where surface water enter intermittent
stream or river. Do not apply within 200 ft. of
lake or impoundment. Product must be incorporated
2-3 on tile field or applied to heavy residue.
Do not exceed 2.5 Lbs/acre application of
Atrazine in any calendar year
4.6 Pest Management Practices
12Other Examples of Pesticide Restrictions
- Honey bee protection, setbacks , no puddling
- Endangered species, brown Sadder butterfly,
Kirkland warbler. - Local County based ordinances, Van Buren Co.
Grape / 2,4-D setbacks, and notification. -
- See your local MSU or USDA office for specific
area concerns.
13Field maps indicating pesticide-labeled setbacks
and shallow groundwater restrictions are
followed.

The Robins farm , Wensel farm , Studeman farm ,
The J L Farm- and Bill L. farm are all manage
by the same operation. Herbicides are all applied
by Lee (RUP cert. m..) or Edd (RUP cert.
m..) Corn is grown in rotation with
soybeans on all field except for alfalfa on the
west 18 acre of Studeman farm and the South east
10 acres of the Bill L. farm. The product use
list Follows
Corn -Prowl - 3.3EC at 1.5 qt. / acre -Bicept

26Pesticide Protection for Critical Areas
- Inventory pesticide use
- Develop a list of water quality related label
restrictions for pesticide used - Identify critical Areas that may invoke
restrictions - Map restricted areas
- Inform / instruct pesticide applicator of water
quality restrictions
