Title: Recommendations to NSF

1
Recommendations to NSF
  • The US should support development of an Arctic
System Model through an open call from US
agencies. We recommend two five year funding
cycles to ensure completion of a viable Arctic
    System Model.
  • This model should be constructed in an end-to-end
framework that enables dynamic coupling among all
system components (a core code with complete
package of ocean, sea and land ice, atmosphere,
and land, as well as terrestrial and marine
    ecosystems).
  • This model should be built around a common
    existing flux coupler.
  • Longer term vision includes social systems,
    metagenomics.

2
Recommendations to NSF
  • There should be a central support and diagnostics
center for the activity, to feature an active
    visitor program and virtual international
    collaboratory.
  • Facilitate a testbed for parameterizations from
    other programs.
  • Coordinating efforts among observational programs
    and modeling efforts.
  • Provide computational support and resources
  • Extensive dedicated computer resources must be
    available.
  • New parameterization requires new, focused data
    collection and process studies.
  • ASM analyses depend upon existing observing
systems and should guide development of new
    observational programs.
  • Dedicated scientific and programmatic support.
  • Community users would have responsibility for
substituting their own component modules as
    desired.
  • Empowered coordinating group with a strong
    leader.
  • Follow the CCSM-like working group structure
    entraining international participants.
  • Strive to be compatible with widely used coupling
    frameworks.
  • Accelerate arctic nesting capabilities in global
    earth system models.

3
Recommendations to NSF
  • Science driven pilot projects (conducted with a
coupled system) for advancement of science and
    early successes
  • Trajectory of Sea Ice
  • Carbon flux changes
  • Processes affecting Greenland melt.
  • Coastal Vulnerability
  • Atmospheric chemistry and composition
  • Short-term affects of permafrost degradation
