Who Benefits from Enhanced Courses?
Generally, students who are able to
  • Process information rapidly and link concepts
    easily.
  • Think creatively, in ways which reach beyond
    societys accepted and/or expected pattern.
  • Offer insightful responses and an interest in
    social issues.
  • Uniquely process and express knowledge and
    understanding.

Goals of the Enhanced Magnet Program
  • Provide academic classes throughout high school
    offering additional challenges and unique
    learning opportunities without an increased
    workload.
  • Extend learning opportunities and foster
    diversity in intellectual stimulation.
  • Create a safe environment for intellectual
    inquiry and growth.

Grade Nine Programme
  • English, French, math, science, and geography are
    enhanced classes.
  • Course objectives and expectations are identical
    to academic courses. Evaluation opportunities
    tend to be more diverse, unique and cross
    curricular.
  • Three integrated options at the open level
    complete the 8 course requirement.

Grade Ten Programme
  • English, French, math, science, civics and
    careers and history are enhanced.
  • Course objectives and expectations are identical
    to academic courses. Evaluation opportunities
    are still more diverse, unique and cross
    curricular.
  • Two options at open or academic level.

Grade Eleven Twelve Programme
  • Integration into university level courses with a
    continued option of taking enhanced classes.
  • Enhanced courses will be offered in a greater
    variety of subject areas, subject to availability
    and interest. All departments are currently
    planning their involvement.
  • Students in the enhanced program would graduate
    from Preston High school with a certificate of
    participation and appropriate designations on
    their transcripts.

Application Process
  • Submit a completed application to PHS, to the
    attention of Catherine Gendron, by Friday,
    January 21, 2005. Be sure to include
  • A student learning profile completed by a parent
    and student.
  • A student learning profile submitted by a grade 8
    teacher (at a later date)
  • A copy of the most recent report card.
  • A brief written piece outlining why participation
    in the program is desired.

  • Include a daytime phone number AND an email
    address.
  • We anticipate the process to consist of a number
    of steps, and this may include an additional
    request for more information and/or an interview.
  • Only those applicants who have been selected for
    the program will be contacted by phone or email.
