Title: Grade One News
1Reading In Readers Workshop, we have been
reading lots of great stories. As we have been
completing our assessments, our guided reading
groups have begun. By working in flexible small
groups we are able to support students learning
at each childs instructional level. This
develops confident and independent readers who
love to read. They are also learning how to
choose Just Right books. Thanks for all of your
reading support at home and helping your child
record his/her books in the Reading Log.
Grade One News September 2008
Writing The grade one authors have been busy
writing about personal experiences as they
learned the routines of writing workshop during
the first month of school.
2MathIn first grade, students use the Everyday
Math program. In the beginning units of the
program, the students are encouraged to look for
numbers in real life situations. They often
dont realize that math is everywhere in our
everyday lives. For example, they may help set
the alarm clock at night or look at the calendar
to see when the next holiday is coming up.
Air and Weather This month students have been
studying air and weather. In this science unit,
the children explore the natural world by using
simple tools to observe properties of air and to
measure and monitor change in the weather from
day to day and over the seasons.
Miscellaneous It was great to see so many parents
make it for our Grade One Open House. We look
forward to a great year.
