Title: THE CHLOROPLAST

1
THE CHLOROPLAST
  • Where Plant Cells
  • Make Food

2
The Plant Cell
  • The Chloroplast
  • Contains Chlorophyll which traps sunlight
  • Where plants make food
  • Site of Photosynthesis

3
Your Function
  • Site of Photosynthesis
  • Combine carbon dioxide and water to make food
  • Has chlorophyll, which traps the suns energy and
    uses it to make food

4
What Happens Here
  • The Photosynthesis Reaction
  • carbon dioxide water energy ? glucose
    oxygen
  • C6H12O6 is food that the plant can store.

6CO2 6H2O energy ? C6H12O6 6O2

CHLOROPLASTJob Description
  • Get 6 carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules from the
    cytoplasm.
  • Get 6 water (H2O) molecules from the cytoplasm.
  • Use the atoms from these molecules to make a
molecule of glucose (C6H12O6). If needed, use the
glucose molecule diagram on the next slide.
  • Have the cytoplasm take the glucose molecule to
    the Vacuole for storage.
  • Use the remaining oxygen atoms to make oxygen
    molecules (O2) .
  • Have the cytoplasm carry the oxygen molecules to
the cell membrane where they can be released.

6
The Product That You Make
  • The suns energy is now stored in these chemical
    bonds.
  • Later on in cellular respiration, the energy can
    be released for use.
