5. Chloroplast

• Structure
• Double membrane bound (envelope)
• Within the envelope are numerous sheet like
  lamellae consisted of a pair of unit membranes
• Granal region
• two unit membranes are slightly further apart,
  enclosing another thin membrane, each flattened
  membranous sac is called thylakoid
• Disc-shaped thylakoids are packed closely
  together, forming grana
• Surface of thylakoid consists large number of
  particles called quantasomes
• Intergranal region

• Morphology
• Biconvex in shape
• Change in size and shape with the presence of
  light
• Functions
• Thylakoids are surrounded by a water-soluble,
  largely proteinaceous material called stroma
  which contains enzymes responsible for reduction
  of CO2 in Calvin cycle
