Terri started working in Conference Event
Services as a part-time student employee while
also having worked in the Students' Union Zoo.
Terri became the Manager of Conference Event
Services in 2005 we are now fortunate to have
Terri as the Housing Manager since 2007. Terri
has been indoctrinated into the way of life of a
Residence student already has many stories to
tell - many of them funny! We congratulate Terri
on her 15 years with us can only hope there
will be many more!

Stephane Simard, a recipient of the Prairie
Baseball Teacher of the Year Award, is well known
as a demanding instructor who challenges his
students' but is still not afraid to let the
tumble weeds roll in his attempt to make the
students laugh with a reference to 80's pop
culture.

Michael Kubara has been a central figure in the
University of Lethbridge Faculty Association, and
has for all of his teaching career engaged his
students in the critical appraisal of ideologies
of all kinds. Congratulations Michael on 40
outstanding years of service!

4MARTY GADD BUILDING MAINTENANCE
20 Years of Service
Marty joined the University in 1989 as the
Assistant Superintendent of Buildings responsible
for managing the Caretaking Department. He soon
after initiated the campus paper recycling
program which continues today. During the budget
cutbacks in the early 1990's Marty salvaged
in-house Caretaking Services by reorganizing the
department initiated day cleaning. A process
almost unheard of in those days. When Jim Moch
retired as the Superintendent of Buildings, for
several years Marty managed both the operations
of Bldg. Maintenance Caretaking Services. In
2003 Marty developed a 240 hour Building Operator
Certification course administered by L.C.C. all
U of L Bldg. Maintenance staff employed at that
time received certification. Marty has always
considered it a privilege to be employed at the U
of L hopes in a small way he has made a
difference in the past and can continue to do so
in the future.

5TED MALINSKY BUILDING MAINTENANCE
20 Years of Service
Ted was originally hired in 1988 by the
Caretaking Dept. as a sessional employee,
responsible for cleaning the kitchen, cafeteria
the University's only carpet shampooer on
weekends. In 1991 Ted was promoted to the weekend
Foreman position. He soon after obtained
certification for servicing appliances small
engine repair was given the added
responsibility of maintaining all Caretaking
equipment on campus. In 1998 Ted's duties were
divided between Caretaking Building Maintenance
with the added responsibility of assisting the
locksmith half days. Ted has recently enrolled at
Red Deer College for a Locksmith Apprenticeship
Program continues to be a very valuable
employee within Facilities.

6CATHERINE KINGFISHER - ANTHROPOLOGY
10 Years of Service
Catherine Kingfisher is recognized as a leading
researcher in the Anthropology of North America,
with a distinguished record of research
publication. She currently is the editor of North
American Dialogue, the publication of the Society
for the Anthropology of North America. She has
tirelessly served the Department of Anthropology
and the University at-large in numerous
leadership roles was promoted to Full Professor
last year.

Doris has been the Administrative Assistant to 10
different University Librarians including acting
ones in her 30 years with the University.
Throughout, she has maintained a ready smile a

workspace. She has, continues to be, an
integral indispensable member of the Library
Administrative team known for her authentic
cheerfulness helpful attitude. Doris has also
been known to "moonlight" as Secretary for
Presidential Search Review Committees.

Lisa Doolittle joined the Dept. of Theatre
Dramatic Arts in 1989. Lisa's research interests
are intercultural multicultural performance,
theatre for community development, Canadian
dance, physical theatre, the body movement in
actor training. Something to Declare (Nov. 2007),
her most recent performance creation, was based
on interviews with recent immigrants to
Lethbridge. In 2007, she received the
Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations'
Distinguished Academic Award for contributions to
the wider community beyond the university, she
is currently the first member of the Faculty of
Fine Arts to be honoured as a University Scholar!

Gary has been at the University since grade

25 years of experience knowledge of University
building control systems. John has taken on a
new role over the past couple of years as one of
the commissioning agents of major construction

abide by the specification and guidelines. John,

10 Years of Service
10 years ago Fred Greene joined the Art Gallery
as Administrative Manager how time flies! He had
his work cut out for him in 1999 the art
collection had outgrown its premises needed to
be inventoried moved to the new Art Vault
building an electronic database for the
collection needed to be constructed - Fred
attacked the challenges with enthusiasm great
energy, inspired his staff by his
example. Fred's taste for hard work his drive
for perfection also served him well in his
earlier career as an artifact conservator he
worked at the Glenbow Museum later in Italy,
Israel several African countries. This wealth
of experience translated into many interesting
amusing stories a love of good food, which he
likes to share (Fred is an excellent cook his
barbecued salmon is to die for!). Besides being a
very good administrator Fred is also a caring guy
who likes to help people he is a great
colleague, and we look forward to working with
him until Retirement grabs him!

July, 1999. As Program Coordinator, he lead the
founding class of BFA New Media students through
their first year of studies. Dr. Smith is a

boundaries of dance and New Media.

Jim Booth is the Executive Director of Ancillary
Services resident capitalist on campus, a
position he has held for 15 years. Jim oversees
the Bookstore, Printing Services, Conference
Services, Food Services Student Housing. On a
personal note, Jim is an accomplished musician
likes to play guitar sing. He has been
persuaded to bring his guitar along to senior
admin. retreats his colleagues are treated to
after dinner ambiance. Jim also has a great sense
of humour always has a good joke for anyone who
will listen. If you ever need cheering up, just
stop by Jim's office for a few minutes to lift
your spirits he always has jokes for those in
need of a good laugh. Thank you Jim, for 15 years

Carrie is the Executive Director of Financial
Services, a position she has held since June
2007. Carrie has worked her way up through the
University, starting as Clerk Typist in 1988.
Carrie's commitment to life-long learning has
earned her a Certified Management Account
designation, as well as an MBA. Carrie is the
epitome of customer service regularly goes
beyond the call of duty to help anyone
out. Carrie has recently taken up marathon
running completed her first marathon in
Phoenix, Arizona earlier this year. All that
exercise should come in handy, when she joins the
University Fiat Dux Dragon Boat Team for the
first time this summer. Little does she know -
our coach Andrew Hakin is a task-master already
having the Dragon Boat teams work-out months
prior to the July races. Please join me in

Edward Jurkowski has served the University of
Lethbridge as a dedicated teacher, gifted
administrator, international scholar trusted
colleague for over a decade now. He has

teaching but also through his leadership as Chair
of the department for the last five years and his
redesign of the academic curriculum. On the
national and international level his work as a
leading expert in 20th century music and his
position as former President of the Canadian
University Music Society has brought distinction
to the University as a centre of excellence in
research.

be seen juggling numerous tasks while pulling her
hair out, yet still maintaining a high degree of
composure - a testament to her multi-tasking
abilities.

Nicholas Wade is Associate Professor in the Dept.
of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts, where he teaches
sculpture related art studio practices. He has
been at the U of L since 1994. He recently served
a one-year term as a teaching fellow with
CAETL. Nicholas Wade's work has been exhibited in
major cities across Canada at several venues in
the U.S. is represented in the collections of
The Canada Council Art Bank, The Alberta
Foundation for the Arts, The Nova Scotia Art
Bank, The Ontario Arts Council. Wade's
sculpture reflects an interest in the use of
material form from our built environment - in
particular, how forms are repeated in variations
shifts of scale from printed text tableware,
to furniture architecture. He is currently
participating in a creative research residency at
"gueststudio DRC," Den Haag, Holland, while on
study leave.

34JUDITH WHITEHEAD - ANTHROPOLOGY
15 Years of Service
Judith Whitehead is an internationally recognized
scholar of political economy who publishes widely
in the areas of environment, urban space, gender
and the body in South Asia. Her book, Lost
Landscapes Space, Place Accumulation by
Dispossession in the Narmada Valley, is in press
with Pearson International. Dr. Whitehead joined
the U of L in 1996 and is currently the longest
serving member of the Anthropology Department.

35TERESA HEYBURN THEATRE DRAMA
15 Years of Service
Teresa, or T as she is affectionately known by
many of her colleagues, might be described as a
passionate, energetic dynamo who is unfailingly
committed to her job. For the last 15 years
Teresa has been the Costume Shop Manager for the
Theatre Dramatic Arts Department where she has
been integral in the creation of costumes for
well over 60 shows featuring more than 500
costumes. Always ready with a smile a
willingness to help, Teresa is liked respected
by students colleagues both on off campus
she facilitates students learning, advises local
teachers on costuming their productions, finds
the perfect costume for an Art photo shoot, a New
Media film or pulls together a fashion show to
promote Fine Arts and the University.

20 Years of Service
Barb started her full-time position with the
University in July 1989 as Account Clerk. Her
title changed to Payroll Clerk April 1990 then to
Pay Benefits Assistant in 1997 then to Pension
Benefits Specialist. While the titles may have
changed through the years, Barb's commitment to
her work your well being has not. She has been
one of the first to see us when we start here
one of the last to see us on our way to our next
position elsewhere or to retirement. She has
signed most of us up for our benefits, helped us
with our changes over the years such as adding
family members, taking them off when they have
grown up, answered our questions about health
dental, insurance, maternity parental leaves
and given us information to help us make that
pension decision wished us well out the
door. Thank you Barb for the professional you are
your commitment to the people of this
university!

Gloria has been with the Bookstore for 20 years
and has touched every job there is. Gloria's
title in the store is "Jill of all Trades" and

idea that is going on. Gloria has definitely
worked towards her "Master of all trades" over
the 20 years she has been with us! Gloria retires
this fall and we will miss her terribly.

Andrea is the Director of the International
Programs Office in the Faculty of Management
the Coordinator of the First Nations' Governance
program. She also serves as the chair for
International Management. Andrea her staff do
an excellent job of coordinating the
international student exchange programs
international student work-study programs as well
as support Aboriginal student recruitment in the
First Nations Governance program. Andrea has
devoted many long hours time away from her
family to ensure that the Faculty's International
Exchange Program First Nations' Governance
Program are a success. Her teaching research
interests are in the areas of cross-cultural
management, international law policy and gender
relations.

Stuart Thomas is one of our accounting
professors. He has a Ph.D. in accounting from
Florida International University and he is a
certified management accountant. His research
interest is in ethical decision making and his
teaching speciality is in management control
systems. Stuart comes from Jamaica and enjoys
soccer, running, and chess. He has a wife and two
kids. Stuart agrees that there is nothing amusing
to say about him because he is not an amusing guy!

Sajjad is primarily known for his work in
Multi-Criteria Decision Making using the Analytic
Hierarchy Process. He has researched web page

among those in the Information Systems area, and
has been a valued mentor to colleagues and

Judy Lavorato began with the University of

We are very pleased to congratulate Dr. Ken Nicol
on 25 years of service with the U of L. Since
joining the University in what was then the
School of Management, Ken has been keenly focused
on agricultural economics politics in Alberta.
One might say he is all about the 'the grass
roots.' Ken served as Assistant Dean under Dean
George Lermer from 1990 - 1993 in the newly
official Faculty of Management, then headed off
on political leave to be a crusading Liberal MLA
the Alberta Liberal Party leader.

Mike Spiteri is one of those guys behind the
scenes that the University of Lethbridge cannot
do without. Mike's talents hard work have
provided the U of L with a world class classroom
audio-visual infrastructure. His support of
classroom technology troubles has saved more than
one class from cancelling and has enabled
countless others to expand student classroom
experiences. When Mike is not supporting
classrooms, he can be found working on his house,
or apologizing for one of his dog's exploits. The
University of Lethbridge is lucky to have Mike
his hard work in the classroom technology.

50CATHY NEWMAN - ADMISSIONS
10 Years of Service
10 years ago, Cathy Newman joined us, coming from
Lethbridge College. If the LC Registrar, Linda
Hoover, had not been such a wonderful person,
this might have caused a permanent rift between
the 2 institutions, much more serious than any of
this degree granting discussion! However, all is
well we are still close. Cathy is the "behind
the scenes" force helping keep numerous GFC
committees on track, the Alberta Transfer Guide
up to date, the senior folks in the RO aware of
issues. On top of her intense job
responsibilities, Cathy is making steady progress
toward completing her BA in Social Sciences here
at the U of L - and this along with already
completed LC Diploma in Administration. One of
Cathy's great "graduations" was from the back of
her partner's Harley to the driver's seat of her
own Harley Davidson Dyna-Low_Rider. Go Cathy!!

- Debi started with the U of L in 1988. She left
for a couple of years but missed us so much she
had to come back. Alas, on her return she had to
start over with her service record so this is the
longest 10-year service award in U of L history!
Debi's achievements at the U of L are too
numerous to mention so she has asked us not to
mention them. Two achievements which must be
noted - Debi was the first recipient of the President's
Award for Service Excellence. Way to go Debi! - On her return to the U of L, Debi originated the
expression "Freedom 72! Ouch!!

Stewart Rood, a past recipient of the Ingrid
Speaker Medal for Outstanding Research, was
awarded a highly prestigious Killam Research
Fellowship in 2009. These awards, together with

Pat has managed Career Employment Services ever
since she arrived here from what is now Fifth on
Fifth. Student employment is a big part of
students' lives and Pat has a huge investment in
helping students find employment and in helping
employers find students. Pat is well-known on
campus for organizing what employers call "The
Best Career Fair in Alberta." Not so long ago,
Pat would work until midnight and then come in to
work early the next morning. Her colleagues
accused her of having a pull-out cot in her
office OR sleeping under her desk. That's Pat -
dedication plus!

Helena Danyk, current Associate Chair in the
Department of Biological Sciences, combines years
of excellence in the classroom with outstanding
service contributions to the department, faculty,
and university. She is the 'glue' that holds our
complex undergraduate curriculum together, and
she takes the lead on our training program for
new Graduate Student teaching assistants.

While Peter Piper may have picked a peck of
perfect peppers, Linda Sebastian presses printing
to produce a passel of precise parchments - AND -
patiently prods parents to the photo line for
perfect pictures! Linda manages the other half
of convocation along with the timetable BANNER
curriculum updating. One of our many fond
memories of Linda goes back to when she had to
shepherd a late grad into line at the morning
ceremony - and not just any grad. This grad was
in a blue white Elvis suit with sequins, had
clearly come straight to Convocation from his
all-night grad party, was sliding his way along
the wall to get to the front of the gym. Linda
had to intercept him, bring him to the back where
she helped him with cap gown then held him up
until he got into his line. "He weren't nothing
but a hound-dog" Linda can handle any situation
with grace aplomb!

Where to start with Penny Secretan? Penny can
make the most upset student feel calm,
appreciated respected. She can answer a phone
call from the most irate faculty member furious
about rooms have them chatting before the call
is done. She is fiercely committed to treating
students as people not as numbers - they love her
for it we appreciate her for reminding us to
put students first. Penny makes the world's best
cinnamon buns shares. She is another of our
fitness fanatics you never know if she has just
walked to work from Heritage or attended the
early morning spin class. We think that the
funniest thing that has happened to Penny
occurred when one of her sons was attending the U
of L. She her son were walking across the
parking lot into the SUB. Later that day, one
of her son's friends asked him "Hey! Who was that
blonde you were walking with this morning?" We
agree - Penny is our very own blond bombshell
with energy to spare a great heart.

John Bain combines passion for teaching with his
well-known dedication to rigor in the classroom.
He has unparalleled dedication to the day-to-day
functioning of the Department of Biological
Sciences, especially regarding the undergraduate
curriculum. John is a world-renowned expert on
the evolution, taxonomy, and distribution of
terrestrial plants.

Guy worked on the very first U of L Student
System which was called JASPER. No walk in the
park, this stood for "Jack's Automated Student
Program for Enquiry Registration". (Who was
jack? Well, Jack Oviatt, the U of L's first
Registrar). Guy is as close to being
irreplaceable as anyone around for his incredible
technical abilities his depth of knowledge.
Guy has taken up a number of hobbies over the
years including riding motorcycles most
recently, sailing both at St. Mary's and on the
deep blue sea. Guy also can bake up a storm
it's hard to choose which Halloween entry was
better - his "Jello Brains" (very realistic) or
his "Dirt Cakes" (with candy worms crawling out).

Writer, scholar, and outstanding teacher, Cynthia
Chambers sees herself her research as very much
a product of her lived experience. Her career's
work has centred on Aboriginal themes,
particularly Aboriginal language and narrative.
She believes that students teachers need to
comprehend how their own experiences are crucial
to understanding what they are studying and
teaching.

Joan is one of the Academic Advisors in the

Kathleen is an Academic Advisor in the Faculty of
Management. She is a role model for others
because she takes on all sorts of extra jobs

daughter are both U of L students, Kathleen is
also pursuing a graduate degree part-time, so
she's got a chance to see things from a student
perspective. She needs a ton of energy to do all
she does, but she has it!

Ten years ago, we lured Dawn Ann over to the U of
L from the College - and she quickly became one
of the Wonder Women of the Information Centre.
Last year, she moved over to Admissions where she
soon became an integral part of the team. When
not at work, Dawn Ann is a book-keeper, chauffeur
tutor for her busy family. Being a woman of
many gifts, Dawn Ann finds time to sit in the hot
tub on her deck, can drive a mean gravel truck,
and is a fitness fanatic who can walk faster than
the average person can run.

Gitte Villiger has worked in the main Library
in the Curriculum Laboratory in her 20 years of
service, but most of them have been in the
Faculty of Education Curriculum Laboratory. She
has worked as a Library Operations Specialist II,
LOS III, now as APO Support Staff Supervisor
circulation Manager. She brings a high level of
professionalism to all the work she does, and has
a real gift when it comes to the supervision of
people. She certainly deserves an award for
lasting 20 years!

If you're an early-morning or noon-hour regular
at the gym you'll probably know Lynne by sight if
not by name, as she is perhaps the Library's most
committed sport fitness enthusiast. Off-campus
Lynne spends much of her time outdoors, walking
along the river bottom in the evenings, or in
warmer weather cycling or enjoying a good golf
game. In the Library Lynne is one of the most
experienced knowledgeable staff in all matters
having to do with services resources offered at
the main service desk. Thank you Lynne, for your
35 years of knowledgeable, productive service in
the Library and your willingness to share your
wealth of expertise with colleagues.

Ian MacLachlan enjoys an international reputation
for his research activities, especially for his

precision combined with an accessible writing
style. Closer to home, Ian is known and
respected for his commitment to his students,
many of whom keep in touch with him long after
graduation, and for his many contributions to the
university.

Since joining the Philosophy Department in 1989,
Michael has taught in Philosophy, Women's Studies
Liberal Arts. His research focuses on how the
evolution of social organisms can lead to the
development of moral capacities, up to and
including the capacity to think and talk about
morality. Michael has also been active in
applied ethics, serving on the Community Research
Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA), the board of the
Provincial Health Ethics Network (PHEN) and the
multi-year AHFMR sponsored Alberta Research
Ethics Community Consensus Initiative (ARECCI)
process. Last, but far from least, he continues
to serve as chair of the Philosophy Department.

staff whose careers in the Library has spanned
