20THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- The Holy Spirit is given to the Jews first, then
to the Samaritans, and lastly to the Gentiles as
recorded in the Book of Acts.
21THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- The supernatural phenomena associated with the
coming of the Holy Spirit is not normative and
not meant to be repeated by Christians as part of
their Holy Spirit experience.
22THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- The coming of the Holy Spirit supernaturally
equipped the apostles and others to be
witnesses and as such speak the Gospel of the
Resurrected Christ to the Jews, Samaritans, and
Gentiles of the world.
23THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Tongues (dialects and languages) was the
missionary strategy of the early church to get
the message (be witnesses) of Christ to the Jews,
the Samaritans, and the Gentiles of the first
century.
24TONGUES TRIVIA
- Not mentioned on any of the three missionary
journeys of Paul as reported in the Book of Acts. - Not mentioned in 21 of the 22 NT Church
epistles. Only the NT epistle of 1 Corinthians,
chapters 12-14 make any reference to tongues.
25TONGUES TRIVIA
- Acts 2 is the only place in the NT where
tongues is described or defined. - In Acts 2 it constitutes known languages and
dialects spoken in the world but not previously
known or learned by the person supernaturally
gifted by God to speak it.
26TONGUES TRIVIA
- Pseudo-tongues or ecstatic utterance is
spoken by numerous cults and religions throughout
the world, past and present. - People in almost every religion practice some
form of ecstatic utterance and it is a common
human experience.
27TONGUES TRIVIA
- Ecstatic utterance is the experience of
uttering sounds, words, etc. while in an
heightened emotional state. - Isaiah 819-20
- 1 Kings 1826-29
- 1 Corinthians 121-3
28- Social scientists and linguists have studied the
phenomena of speaking in tongues. The modern
tongues movement is not actually the speaking of
a foreign language, as seen in Acts chapter 2,
but an ecstatic utterance.
29TONGUES TRIVIA
- Pseudo-tongues has three possible causes.
- A contrived or fabricated or staged and in a
cultural context. - A psychological event brought on by suggestion,
emotional manipulation through rhythmic music,
word and phrase repetitions, and/or drugs, etc. - Demonic influence.
30- Ecstatic phenomenon traditionally associated with
religious experiences. It has been practiced
through the ages in various religious settings,
both Christian and non-Christian, by individuals
in private as well as by whole communities. - Baker encyclopedia of the Bible
31- How do we explain tongues today? As has been
noted, tongues-speaking is also practiced in many
heathen religions throughout the world today.
Certainly this is not the work of the holy
Spirit. Perhaps Behaviour Scientists are correct
in saying that much of tongues-speaking has a
natural explanation.
32- However, this much is observable - when a person
has experienced tongues he is absolutely
convinced as to the scripturalness of his
experience and the correctness of his doctrinal
beliefs.
33- Hence the traditional Pentecostal insists on the
correctness of the "second blessing." The
theologically liberal Protestant who speaks in
tongues feels that his doubt in the inspiration
of the Bible is vindicated.
34- Catholic Pentecostals testify that the
charismatic experience has deepened their
devotion to Mary. A glossolalic experience
convinces Mormons that their brand of
Christianity is right, etc.
35- Thus, while tongues may not be directly caused by
Satan yet it can be used by him as an effective
means of sidetracking sincere Christians. Satan's
involvement in the charismatic wonders cannot be
ruled out as part of the deceptive wonders at the
end of the age.
36- The following scriptures reveal that one of the
signs of the end of the world or age would be the
phenomenal working deceptions of Satan in the
Church.
37- Matthew 242, 24
- And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these
things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone
shall be left here upon another, that shall not
be thrown down. For false christs and false
prophets will rise and show great signs and
wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
38- 2 Thessalonians 29-11
- The coming of the lawless one is according to the
working of Satan, with all power, signs, and
lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception
among those who perish, because they did not
receive the love of the truth, that they might be
saved. And for this reason God will send them
strong delusion, that they should believe the
lie,
39- My Personal Belief About The Practice Of Tongues
In The Church Today - Tongues today is not the same as tongues
(dialects) on the Day of Pentecost but ecstatic
utterances and pseudo-tongues. It is a
religious experience not rooted in Biblical
Christianity, but common among many religions.
40- My Personal Belief About The Practice Of Tongues
In The Church Today - Tongues today cannot be used to speak the gospel
in the language of the unsaved therefore tongues
serves no spiritual or practical purpose in the
plan of God for the church. - 1 Corinthians 145-12
- 1 Corinthians 138
