  • Founded in 1991 by Dietitians of Canada to fund
    nutrition and dietetic research
  • More than 1 million awarded to date
  • More than 93 dietitians and their research teams
    funded
  • CFDR encourages dietitians to include research in
    their practice
  • New last year New Researcher grant program 3
    grants awarded in 2009

  • Recognizing dietetic students for their research
    work
  • Encouraging students to include research in their
    dietetic careers

CFDRs Morgan Medal Awards Program
  • A series of awards that are a memorial tribute to
    the late Susan Morgan, former manager of CFDR
  • Susan Morgan ardent supporter of the dietetic
    profession, of practice-based research and of
    mentoring novice researchers.

The Morgan Medal - Criteria
  • Excellence in an intern / student practice-based
    research project and
  • Like Susan, someone who demonstrates
  • support of peers and leadership qualities
  • enthusiasm for and commitment to the profession
  • a positive outlook and determination
  • the ability to rise to the challenge

Awards Categories
  • Two award categories
  • Regional awards One award presented annually in
    each of the six regions of Dietitians of Canada.
    Recipients receive commemorative plaques
  • National Award A national Morgan Medal recipient
    selected from amongst all regional award
    recipients. Recipient receives special
    commemorative award and all expenses to attend DC
    national conference

Who is eligible to apply?
  • Anyone who was a dietetic intern or practicum
    student in the year preceding date of
    application.
  • Applicant must be a student (Qualifying) member
    of Dietitians of Canada at the time of
    application.
  • Additional information regarding eligibility
    criteria is posted to the CFDR website at
    http//www.cfdr.ca/morganresearch.html

Application process
  • Applications due January 15, 2010.
  • Application consists of 3 parts
  • description of the project that was used to
    obtain internship research competencies
  • letter describing a key learning or significant
    milestone you had in conducting research.
  • Reference Form from your research supervisor
    (available on the CFDR website)

Judging
  • National judging panel consisting of
    representatives from each DC region
  • Applications judged on three main components
  • Description of Research Project (25)
  • Key Learning/Significant Milestone Letter (60)
  • Reference Letter (15)

What the judges said
  • the judging panel was impressed with how
    Roxanne conveyed her enthusiasm for research, her
    appreciation of the importance of fundamental
    nutrition research to the profession of
    dietetics, and her commitment to incorporating
    research into her career. Roxannes application
    letter spoke to the evolution of her views about
    research from an unknown to a strong interest
    that she could approach in future with greater
    confidence.
