WOODLAND ANIMALS
2
BEAVER Appetite Beavers are herbivores. They
eat tree bark, leaves, roots, twigs, and water
plants . Home Beavers build sophisticated
lodges out of sticks and mud. The dome-shaped
lodge is built in water and only has underwater
entrances.
3
BROWN BEAR Appetite Brown bears are omnivores
who eat plants, roots, berries, fungi, fish,
small mammals, and large insects. Home large
mammals that live in cool mountain forests,
meadows, and river valleys
4
Salamander Appetite Most salamanders are
carnivorousthat is, they eat other animals
rather than plants. Adult salamanders that live
in water prey on the larvae of frogs, known as
tadpoles, and various invertebrates, including
snails and worms. Some also eat small
fish. Home Many salamanders inhabit moist,
forested areas, sheltering in shallow burrows or
amidst fallen leaves, logs, and other ground
debris
5
DEER Appetite Deer are shy herbivores
(plant-eaters) who spend most of the day eating
leaves, grass, bark, acorns, and other plant
material. Homes It lives in deciduous forests,
conifer forests, rainforests, grasslands, farm
land, marshes, and even deserts.
6
Red Fox Appetite Foxes are mostly carnivores
(meat-eaters). Foxes eat small mammals (like
mice), eggs, birds, insects, amphibians (like
frogs), reptiles (like lizards), fish, grass,
berries, nuts, and carrion (carcasses of animals
that they find) Home It lives in many different
habitats, including forests, deserts, scrub,
plains, grasslands, and Arctic snow. Many live in
the area where forests meet farms.
7
Opossum Appetite The Opossum is an omnivore
(eating both plants and animals). It eats
insects, lizards, mice, snails, earthworms,
fruit, nuts, seeds, grasses, and carrion (dead
meat that it finds, like road kill). Home They
sleep during the day in a den in a hollow tree or
in an abandoned rodent burrow.
8
Porcupine AppetiteNorth American Porcupines are
herbivores (plant-eaters) who eat leaves, bark,
evergreen needles, buds, twigs, fruit, and salt.
Home The North American Porcupine is a
well-protected, plant-eating rodent that spends
much of its time in trees, looking for food.
9
Raccoon Appetite Raccoons are omnivores they
will eat almost anything, including frogs,
crayfish, birds, mice (and other small mammals),
fruit, nuts, plants, crops, and garbage. Raccoons
find much of their food in water. HomeRaccoons
are small, very adaptable mammals from North and
South America and a few tropical islands. They
live in a variety of habitats, including marshes,
forests, prairies, cities, and suburbs.
10
Rabbit Appetite Rabbits are herbivores
(plant-eaters). They eat grass, leaves, bark, and
twigs. Home They live in a variety of
environments, including deserts, swamps, marshes,
forests, grasslands, and prairies. Rabbits are
found on every continent except Antarctica.
11
Squirrel Appetite Squirrels are omnivores (they
eat plants and meat). They eat seeds, nuts,
leaves, bulbs, roots, mushrooms, insects, worms,
eggs, small birds, and other small animals.
Ground squirrels have pouches in their cheeks in
which they carry food to their burrow to
store. Home Tree squirrels are the squirrels
that are common in cities. Many ground squirrel
hibernate during cold winters, sleeping in a nest
until warm weather arrives.
12
Skunk Appetite Skunks are omnivores they eat
insects, rodents, reptiles, small mammals, worms,
eggs, fish, fruit, and plants. HomeSkunks are
the smelliest mammals. These small, nocturnal
(most active at night) animals are found in South
and Central America and much of North America
(excluding the coldest regions).
13
Hawk Appetite The Red-Tailed Hawk is a
carnivore (a meat-eater) who often catches its
prey while flying, killing it with sharp talons.
It eats rodents (like mice, muskrats, and
squirrels), opossums, moles, weasels, reptiles
(like snakes), amphibians, and other birds (like
pigeons, quail, crows, ducks, and woodpeckers).
The hawk eats the entire prey, regurgitating
inedible parts, like fur, feathers, teeth, and
bone. Home The Red-Tailed Hawk's large nest is
built out of sticks, bark and leaves, and is
located high in a tree.
