What is the Olympics?
Medal ceremonies are one of the most exciting and
important events in the Olympic games for the
medal winning athletes. At medal ceremonies the
medal winning athletes are presented with their
medals. The gold winners countries national
anthem is played. After the ceremony the athletes
get photos taken and are presented with flowers.
Usually they throw them up to the crowd. They are
always proud.
The Olympics is a series of sports played in a
competition. In this competition countries
compete to win medals. First gold, second silver,
and third bronze. Countries send their best
athletes to compete. Sports such as rowing,
basketball, gymnastics, swimming and cycling.
7Ancient Olympics
The Ancient Olympics were a bit different from
the Olympics now, called the modern Games. This
was because there was less events and only men
who spoke Greek could compete. The Olympics were
always held in Olympia instead of moving around
to different countries. The events were Chariot
racing, running, boxing, equestrian, discus,
javelin, riding, pentathlon, pankration and jump.
8Opening Ceremony
Closing Ceremony
The Olympics opening ceremony usually has lots of
fireworks and music. In one of the countries they
will choose a flag bearer to wave their national
flag while they are walking. The athletes of the
country competing walk behind them waving at the
crowd and taking pictures. Then someone of the
country the Olympics is being held in will sing
the national anthem. All the flags of the country
competing will go through where it is being held.
Usually at an opening ceremony there is a very
big crowd watching. Someone will have a
name-board saying the country. The Olympic flame
will be lit on its holder.
The closing ceremony must take place in the
stadium after the end of all the events. The flag
bearers of the participating countries and the
name-board-bearers enter the stadium in single
file. Behind them march the athletes who
competed. The closing ceremony also has lots of
fireworks and music. Someone will also sing the
national anthem of the country the Olympics was
held in. The Olympic torch will be blown out for
another 4 years.
9The modern Olympics
The modern Olympics, is one of the most watched
sporting events around the world on TV. It is
anticipated by many, and has lots of fire works
and special effects. In the ancient Olympics,
most of the events were held outside. But
nowadays we have more technology, to build bigger
and better stadiums, for events to be held in.
The modern Olympics are more exciting to watch.
This is because we have more modern equipment and
better clothes for our athletes to wear. In
marathons, we have a special machine, that allows
water to spray on the athletes to keep them cool.
10Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympics!

field events are held. Around the Beijing roads,
