  • Upscale, Highly Educated, Entrepreneurial and
    Professional.

3
The only debate is about its size
  • A July 2003 Census update estimates the
    population at 338,000.

    population at 600,000.

4
Iranian Government Report
  • The Iranian government estimates that 2 million
persons emigrated from Iran over the past
    decades.
  • One million settled in a variety of nations with
    a large portion in Canada.
  • The remaining million came to the United States
which now has the largest concentration of
Iranians outside of Iran with at least 50
settling in the Los Angeles, Southern California
    area.

5
MIT Reports
  • At the present time the MIT Iranian Studies
Group is re-examining the Census undercount and
expects its findings to be released shortly.

Fact sheet on the Iranian-American Community
  • Estimated Population in the U.S. (Source 2000
    Census, July 2003 update)
  • Persons claiming primary and secondary Iranian
    ancestry 338,266
  • The Iranian-American community believes there
may be serious underestimation of the actual
population due to adverse perceptions of
    Iranian-Americans on claiming Iranian ancestry.
The Iranian Studies group at MIT has estimated
the average number to be 690,000 individuals.

13
Educational Attainment (Source 2000 Census Data)
  • High School Diploma and Higher 90.8 (Second
    highest among 67 ancestry groups)
  • Bachelors Degree or Higher 57.2
(Second highest among 67 ancestry groups)
  • Masters Degree of Higher 27.5
    (Highest among 67 ancestry groups)

14
Iranian-Americans and the U.S. Economy
  • Iranian-Americans have founded and served in
senior leadership positions of many major U.S.
companies, many of them in the Fortune 500. The
following ten Iranian-Americans have been engaged
in the senior leadership of companies worth over
    1000 Billion.

16
Iranian-Americans and the U.S. Academia
  • Hundreds of Iranian-American tenured and
tenure-track academics are teaching and doing
research at top-ranking universities in the U.S.
According to a preliminary list compiled by the
MIT Iranian Studies Group Research Team, there
are over 500 Iranian-American academics teaching
at Universities such as MIT, Harvard, Carnegie
Melon, Yale, Princeton, University of California
System (Los Angles, Berkeley, Irvine, San Diego),
Stanford, USC, Georgia Tech, University of
Wisconsin, University of Michigan, University of
    Illinois, California Institute of Technology,
Boston University, University of Maryland, George
Washington University, and hundreds of other
universities and colleges throughout the United
    States.

17
An Overview Of Socioeconomic Characteristics Of
The Iranian-American Community Based On The 2000
Census
  • The need to have accurate community statistics to
assess the potentials of the Iranian-American
community has long been realized. Pursuant to our
previous publications on this issue, the Iranian
Studies Group at MIT has compiled socioeconomic
statistics from the recently published U.S. 2000
Census data that are of importance to the
Iranian-American community. As in our previous
reports, the statistics again suggest that
Iranian-Americans are among the most educated and
    successful communities in the U.S

18
Population
  • According to the U.S. 2000 Census, 338,000
individuals reported their first or second
ancestry as Iranian. With upper and lower bounds
of this estimate within a 10 error margin, this
places the estimated range between 319,000 and
371,000 individuals (rounded off). Many community
members have indicated that these numbers do not
    represent the entire Iranian-American community,
since many community members have been reluctant
in identifying themselves as such because of the
political problems between Iran and the United
States in the past two decades. In late March
2004, the Iranian Studies Group will publish
initial results of its efforts to assess the
    number of Iranian-Americans through alternative
    statistical methods.

19
Educational Attainment
  • The 2000 census data suggests that the
    Iranian ancestral group have educational
attainments that greatly surpass the national
average. In general, the percent of the Iranians
over 25 years old who have obtained a bachelors
degree or higher was at 57.2 in comparison to
24.4 for the rest of the U.S. population. With
more than 27 of Iranian-Americans over the age
of 25 having a graduate degree or above,
Iranian-Americans are the most highly educated
ethnic group in the United States. With respect
to the gender differences Iranian males and
females are both more educated than the U.S.
    average values. Percentage-wise,
Iranian-Americans hold five times the number of
doctorates than the national average. However,
the proportion of Iranian males with at least a
Bachelors degree is higher than the females (65
to 46). This discrepancy increases for more
advanced degrees. For example, the ratio of males
to females with Masters and Ph.D. are 1.81 and
2.71 respectively, which are higher than the
national averages of 1 1 and 2.31 for Masters
    and Ph.D.s respectively.

20
Income Characteristics
  • The per capita average income for
Iranian-Americans is 50 higher than that of the
nation, while family average income is 38
higher. Compared to the 12 of Americans with per
capita incomes of 100,000 or more, there are
26.2 of Iranian-Americans making the same
amount. The average value of an Iranian-American
home is 2.5 times that of the average home
    nationally. The percentage of Iranian-Americans
living in homes valued more than 1 million is
nearly 10 times that of the national average.

21
Housing characteristics
  • The housing characteristic of Iranian
ancestral group living in the U.S. reveals that
34.9 of this group lives in houses with 5 or
more units (i.e. apartments), which are
significantly higher than the 17 in the U.S.
average. In addition, the median value of the
residences for those with Iranian ancestry is
    268,000 in comparison to 119,600 for U.S.
average. This is further reflected in the fact
that 20.8 of Iranian-Americans live in houses
valued at gt500000 in comparison to only 3 for
    the U.S. population

22
Family structure
  • Iranian-Americans are still more conservative in
terms of family structures when it comes to
living with unmarried partners. Only 3 of
    Iranian-Americans live in unmarried households,
compared to 7 nationally. Surprisingly however,
while only 12 of grandparents who live in an
    Iranian-American household are responsible for
taking care of the children, on the national
level, 42 of grandparents who live with their
childrens families take care of the children.

23
Language Spoken at Home
  • More than 73 of Iranian-American households
communicate in both English and Persian. Around
20 communicate only in English. 7 of
    Iranian-American households are considered
linguistically isolated, meaning that English is
not spoken at home at all.

The Los Angeles Iranian-American
  • During the past year Radio Iran KIRN 670AM
utilized its website to conduct a survey of its
    listeners.
  • Just over 1,500 people responded to basic
questions which allowed KIRN to formulate a
    profile of its audience.
  • The Los Angeles listener profile is a very close
match to that of the national picture painted by
    the 2000 U.S. Census of the Iranian-American
    Community.

33
The KIRN listener is
  • Primarily 36-55 years of age
  • Highly Educated
  • A Homeowner
  • At the Upper End of the Income Scale

34
Communities
  • Other research details the communities in
which Los Angeles Iranian-Americans have chosen
to cluster. Most are in the highest priced real
estate areas in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
These areas of high concentration include
  • Beverly Hills Studio City Irvine
  • Westwood Sherman Oaks Mission Viejo
  • Brentwood Encino Laguna Beach
  • Pacific Palisades Tarzana San Clemente
  • Santa Monica Woodland Hills Newport Beach
  • Palos Verdes Calabasas Huntington Beach
  • Torrance Glendale CostaMesa
