Title: Driver Training Stepwise
1Driver Training Stepwise

2Overview
- Driver Training Stepwise
- New assessment method
- Learner Driver Portfolio
3Driver Training Stepwise
- DTS was implemented in 2001
- SUPREME promising measure
- Driver training programme in 4 modules- Vehicle
operation- Simple manoeuvring and simple driving
tasks- Complex driving tasks- Safe and
responsible traffic participation - Voluntary basis about 5 of all candidates do
the whole DTS-system including extra test with
CBR-examiner - But DTS is used on a more wide scale as a
training method
4Important DTS principles
- The pupil learns to drive in a series of highly
structured steps (39 DTS-scripts for standard
driving tasks) - The pupil is only allowed to enter the next stage
of learning (module) if he shows mastery of the
previous stage - At the end of each learning stage there is a test
to assess whether the pupil has obtained the
required level - DTS is tailor-made to the demands of the pupil
- Extra elements integrated into the training
programme (independent driving, ECO-driving,
track-based experience) - DTS already focuses on higher levels of
GDE-matrix, especially in last module - Within DTS the driving instructor is a driving
coach
5Evaluation of DTS
- Pass rate on average 20 percentage points higher
than with traditional training - DTS trained learner drivers do not need more
driving lessons (although DTS has some extra
subjects) - DTS trained candidates perform better on-
automation of technical driving skills- social
driving behaviour- defensive driving- ECO
driving - Better communication between candidates, driving
instructors and examiners
6DTS new assessment instrument, why?
- Scoring faults not consistent with more holistic
approach of GDE-matrix - Scoring faults is looking for accidental wrong
driving behaviour - The driving test should look for positive
evidence of competent driving behaviour - All important driving competencies should be
assessed
7Competency oriented testing
- Assessment evidence should be documented in a
systematic way (not only negative points, but
firstlyfocus on positive points) - No single fault failures any more
- Assessment of the examiner is made more
transparent - Reliability of the driving test will be improved
- Better communication with candidates and driving
instructors will be achieved
8Assessment form (1)
- Driving areas (sustainable safe road
infrastructure)/ tasks - Urban access road in residential areas (30 km/h
zones) - Urban distributor road (50 km/h)
- Rural access road in residential areas (60 km/h)
- Rural distributor road (80 km/h)
- Through road (100 / 120 km/h)
9Assessment form (2)
- Criteria/ aspects of driving behaviour
- Driving safely- safe speed- safe space
- Driving socially- give room- communicate
- Flow contributing- smooth and decisive- use the
road efficiently - Environment friendly- constant speed- efficient
use of gears, engine and equipment - Control- smooth vehicle control- operate
equipment smoothly
10Assessment form (3)
11Learner Driver Portfolio
- Driver performance assessment
- Driver Risk Assessment- Situational awareness
test- Risk profile - Self-evaluation
12Risk Assessment
- Driver questionnaire Categorizes drivers into
risk groups, for instance low-risk, medium risk,
high risk - Situational awareness test Web-based digital
video test resulting in three risk categories
pertaining to four subtests - Recollection of hazard factors
- Action selection decide on a manoeuvre
- Timed response start a manoeuvre in time
- Perception of hazard factors
13Self-evaluation/ driver assessment
- Driver self-assessment Drivers own perception
of acquired driving competence using an
illustrated questionnaire - Driver performance assessmentMultilingual,
PDA-accessible scoring system for in-car driving
performance. Standardized scoring rules in
manual.
14Examples Risk Assessment
15Sample item 1. While driving to destination A,
you wake up frightened and discover you are
driving to destination B, probably because that
is your usual destination.
16Sample item. Item type 1 recollection
What is the speed limit here?
17Sample item. Item type perception
18Sample item. Item type perception
Where do you have to pay attention to at this
moment? Click on the picture.
19Sample item. Item type timed response
Choose the best moment to move to the left for
overtaking. Click on the clip.
20Sample item action selection
What can you do best at this moment?
21Examples Self-assessment
22Do you take your foot off the gas when changing
up a gear?
Sample item of self-evaluation
23How often do you have to stop on the entry lane
because you didnt manage to enter the traffic in
time?
Sample item of self-evaluation
24Driver Performance Assessment
- PDA-accessible
- Scoring system for in-car driving performance
- Standardized scoring rules in a manual

27Comments and advice
28How to use the portfolio?
- The candidate has to handover his/her Learner
Driver Portfolio at the final driving test - The examiner controls if the candidate has a
reliable Learner Driver Profile and if the
candidate has done all of the activities that are
part of the profile - Self-assessment by the candidate will be
explicitly compared with the assessment of the
examiner on the basis of the driving test
29Portfolio strenghts
- By documenting what he/she learns, each pupil is
forced to think about how factors on the higher
levels of GDE can influence his/her driving
behaviour - The pupil is also forced to assess what his/her
strong and weak points are at all the levels of
the GDE-matrix during the various stages of DTS - The pupil is more actively involved in his own
driver training process - Additional authentic evidence about driving
behaviour that cannot be tested in the driving
test can be put in the Learner Driver Portfolio
30Portfolio weaknesses
- How the activities of the Learner Driver
Portfolio are carried out in practice strongly
depends on the contents of the driver training
and the way the activities are carried out by the
driving instructor - Perhaps it would be possible to have some sort of
quality control of the driver training/ driving
instructor (control of the training process
-performed by the testing authority- by randomly
testing if activities are carried out in
prescribed way) - If there is no quality control the Learner Driver
Portfolio may not be seriously taken by the
parties involved (learner driver, driving
instructor and examiner) the portfolio would
than end up as a meaningless piece of paper
that can even be filled out just before the final
driving test.
