PSORIC MIASM

If we wanted to describe the common feature of
the hundreds of psoric symptoms, we would mention
two qualities, oversensitivity and deficiency.
Deficiency is pointed out in some books,
oversensitivity in some other ones.
3
We can understand the sense of oversensitivity
through a simple example. If two different
persons are subjected to an external stimulation,
each one will respond in a different way. The
psoric patient reacts more intensely than a
supposed normal person. There is an excessive
reaction. This reaction is in the right direction
but has an increased intensity. This
oversensitivity occurs in all the functions of
the psoric patient. There is an increase in the
recording of impressions. The psoric person
observes much more from the environment. He is
also easily affected. He is sensitive.
4
He easily gets angry too. After having expressed
his anger, he will sleep well. He is not
resentful. He cries easily too. He feels better
after having cried. There is an emotional
variability that is due to oversensitivity. The
psorics oversensitivity goes together with pure
expressiveness. He is profuse in his expression.
He spreads emotion. The psoric person is a
scientist or an artist. He is oversensitive to
light, sounds, smells. He is easily scared on
trivial occasions. Regarding body the most
characteristic spot of oversensitivity is
itching. External or internal itching, e.g.
tickling is a sign of psora.
5
Repression of physical manifestations of psora
through unsuitable pharmaceutical treatment
results in mental itch, which is even more
tormenting for the patient. These kinds of
repressions have lead Hanhemann to discover the
psoric miasm and to describe it.
6
The other major feature of psoric miasm is
deficiency. This deficiency in terms of phychism
manifests itself as a feeling of inadequacy.
There is a deep feeling of inferiority. It is the
case of a businessman who always needs somebody
to lean on, although he is skilful, intelligent,
and active. He always seeks a partner. If his
partner is cunning, he may take advantage of him.
He always needs support, he always seeks
protection, that is to say.
7
It is the case of a scientist who constantly asks
for the support of his teacher or his colleagues,
though he has a very good command of his science.
Of his relationships he asks affection and
compassion. He needs a friendly environment so
that he may express himself. This is due to
shyness generated by his feeling of inferiority.
He is the type of person full of inhibitions.
There is an inner voice that puts on the brakes
at every step he takes. He is filled with
anxiety, he is easily scared.
8
This feeling of inadequacy makes him live in an
imaginary world. This, however, is not the
autistic world of a schizophrenic. It is just the
feeling of inadequacy that prevents him from
fulfilling his dreams. His rich inner world is
consequently compelled to express through
imagination. We have therefore the case of a
person who attends a lecture but most of the time
he fantasizes some situations instead of paying
attention to the lecture. There is a loss of
contact which is due on the one hand to some
intense emotions, on account of his
oversensitivity, and on the other hand to
non-expression of these emotions, on account of
the feeling of inadequacy.
9
Therefore they are persons with a very rich inner
world, which is not expressed, not fully
materialized, because they lack courage. The
feeling of inferiority causes them a kind of
stagnation, immobility and restraint. If it
werent for this feeling of inferiority they
could have been happier and more useful to
community. Realizing this helplessness of
theirs makes them sad. For all their sadness they
see a light at the end of the tunnel. The saying
Hang on, one day the sun will shine on you
expresses the psoric sadness. There is still hope
inside them it is not all gone yet.
10
The psoric person takes other peoples opinion
into great consideration he respects customs and
traditions, he feels remorse if he breaks the
law. This is easy to explain considering the
feeling of inadequacy. This feeling of inadequacy
makes him always ask for somebodys backing. He
makes relationships of solidarity, bonds of
solidarity and he does not want them to come to
an end because without them he will be left
alone. Behind the great sense of sociability
often hides this need for backing from the group.
He is in great fear of rejection.
11
These needs of him cause a constant inhibition of
I want in favor of I have to. For instance,
every time the psoric is about to make a move, he
wonders if this is the right and proper thing to
do and he usually restrains himself. Psoric
patients have a keen sense of proper pride
towards relatives. They easily get annoyed at
peoples comments, they are touchy. Thats why it
takes them long to express their anger, and when
they do, they forget the incident.
12
The psoric person inclines towards platonic
loves. Lets suppose that a psoric man likes a
woman. He thinks to himself What a lovely
ladyWhat a delicate creatureI wonder if she
likes me. There must be so many men after her,
why should she choose me? What if she turns me
down?. There is an inhibition here too. An
inhibition which is due on the one hand, to his
feeling of inadequacy and on the other hand, to
the fear of the society rejecting his behavior.
This makes him experience love as a fantasy. He
is a person who has fallen in love several times
but has fulfilled his fantasies only a few times.
He is also easily affected, he easily gets upset,
he easily gets hurt. His love fantasies are
heterosexual. He is pure in feelings. He falls in
love with the face, not with the breast, the legs
e.t.c. He appreciates personality, he does not
consider his love partner an object of pleasure.
13
The psoric person also inclines towards religion.
He is not religious in the strict sense of the
word. His faith is philosophical, it is a need
for searching, it is an existential anxiety. It
is, lets say, the feeling of human inadequacy
compared with the vastness of universe. In
general the psoric person tends to conform to
manners and customs, to social rules and has a
developed social consciousness. He believes in
notions, such as family, labor e.t.c. He wants to
have a family, likes to work and fulfills
dutifully his social obligations, the military
service, for instance. He considers it an honor
to serve the community and does not put his
self-interest above all.
14
The feature of deficiency regarding body
manifests itself in various ways, such as
inadequate nourishment. He eats all the time but
the organism cannot assimilate the foods and the
result is deficiency. Those who mention that
deficiency of vitamins and minerals are the cause
of various diseases go together with the
homeopathic thinking because they focus on the
point related to psoric miasm. For instance
deficiency of vitamin A causes dryness. Dryness
is one of the main symptoms of psoric miasm. When
Hanhemann wrote about psoric miasm, he was not
aware of the existence of vitamin A.

Deficiency of minerals causes a disorder to the
normal function of the organism. Calcium
deficiency causes osteomalacia, cardiac
disorders, neuromuscular excitability Potassium
deficiency causes cardiac dysfunction and
disorders of the acid-base balance. Sodium
deficiency causes withholding or loss of water of
the organism. Iodine deficiency causes goiter.
Magnesium deficiency causes neuromuscular
disorders, cardiac dysfunction and osteomalacia.
Ferrum deficiency causes anaemia. Zincum
deficiency causes dermatological disorders,
dysfunction of retina, diabetes, azoospermia,
abortion, senility. Copper deficiency causes
hepatolenticular degeneration, osteoporosis,
anaemia. Cobalt deficiency causes anaemia and
general weakness. Selenium deficiency causes
muscular dystrophy and cardiac dysfunction.
According to the above Hanhemanns theory is
confirmed, by which he considered psoric miasm to
be the basic of the entire human disease.
