Hahnemanns Chronic Diseases
  • Explains Vital Force prior to Miasms
  • Identifying Suppressions and consider them as one
    phenomenon
  • Importance of Anamnesis in Chronic Diseases
  • 3 Patterns of Chronic diseases
  • Nature of Acute diseases
  • Miasms - Predisposition or Acquired???
  • Role of Constitution and temperament
  • Directions of Cure
  • Newer approach of Materia medica
  • Instituting the role of higher Dynamizations
  • Role of Diet, Regimen and Life style

Reforming Homoeopathy into a Dynamic System of
approach in Studying and Treating Chronic
Diseases
3
The Law Of Homoeopaths
For Every action There is an Equal and Opposite
CRITICISM
4
  • Homoeopathy is the grave of science for
science as such has no existence here it dies
    and is buried.
  • - Richard Hughes.(P.21 para 2) Principles and
    Practice of Homoepathy

5
LIFE HISTORY CONTRIBUTIONS
  • Dr. Richard Hughes (1836 - 1902)

  • BIRTH born in London, England
  • EDUCATION He received the title of M.R.C.S.
(Eng.), in 1857 and L.R.C.P. (Edin.) in 1860. The
title of M.D. was conferred upon him by the
American College a few years later
  • CONTRIBUTIONS He actively cooperated with Dr.
T.F. Allen to compile his 'Encyclopedia' and
rendered immeasurable aid to Dr. Dudgeon in
    translating Hahnemann's 'Materia Medica Pura'
into English. In 1889 he was appointed an Editor
of the 'British Homoeopathic Journal' In 1876,
Dr. Hughes was appointed as the Permanent
Secretary of the Organization of the
    International Congress of Homoeopathy Physicians
    in Philadelphia
  • Books 1. Manual of Pharmacodynamics
  • 2. The Principles Practice of
    Homoeopathy

6
FEW GLIMPSES FROM HIS BOOK - Principles and
Practice of Homoepathy
  • Homoepathy is essentially an art and not a
    science.
  • It is based on the doctrine SIMILIA SIMILIBUS
    CURANTUR ( not CURENTUR)
  • Hahnemann believed in illimitable possibilities
in medicine, because he believed in God.
  • The more veresed the homoeopath is in with
Physiology and Pathology, the better for himself
and for those in whose aid he works.
  • The Hahnemannic pathology is a living one, He
varied from time to time as pathology itself
    varied.
  • Hahnemanns ideal Homoeopathy was to obtain a
group of medicine for each morbid species.
  • Similarity between disease and drug-action should
    be GENERIC, SPECIFIC, and INDIVIDUAL.

7
Contd.
  • The later years of Hahnemann was mainly about
    hypothesis., esp. Physiological, Pathological,
    and Pharmacological
  • Physiological Vital Force (He compares it with
Protoplasmic doctrine of life contradicts the
term force., every part is equally alive and
independently active, the unity of whole being
secured only by the common circulation and
    nerves)
  • Pathological Miasms
  • Pharmacological Potentization (Hahnemanns
dynamization in the light of later science must
be held untenable. Their potency is a fact to us.)

8
MIASMS
  • Hahnemann divided miasmatic diseases into two
  • ?Acute
  • ? Chronic
  • Acute Miasms (73)
  • ?Small pox, Measles, Scarlet fever,
    Mumps,
  • ?Plague, Yellow fever, Asiatic cholera,
  • Chronic Miasms (78-80)
  • ?Psora
  • ?Sycosis
  • ?Syphilis

P.85
9
Fundamental Cause 5
  • Why it is useful for this causation known?
  • It is that medicines suitable, not only to the
existing symptom-group, but to the miasm.
  • It guides us to a class of remedies of which we
    otherwise might not have thought.
  • Morbid states could be referred to a common type
and treated by remedies chosen from a definite
    group. (Antimiasmatics)
  • Certain diseases Specific Cause
    Specific Remedies
    Scarlatina-Bell., Condylomata-Thuja., Pertusis
    Drosera., Dysentry-Merc.cor., Goitre - Spongia

P.83- 84
10
  • The Antipsorics indeed are numerous but the
Antisyphilitics and Antisycotics are only 3in
    all.
  • The mass of medicines neverthless are apsoric,
and are not to be used save as temporary
intercurrents in the treatment of chronic
non-veneral disease just as Mercury only to be
given in syphilis, and Thuja and Nitric acid are
to be our sole reliance in sycosis

P.85
11
Psora Theory
P.32-35
  • I can only say what it purports to be and what it
    really is
  • 7/8ths of the non veneral diseases seemed to
    have some analogous miasmatic origin
  • In medical literatures of his day he found
numerous observations of such diseases had a
    suppressing cutaneous eruptions among which
Scabies held a prominent place. It resembled
Syphilis in its communication, stage of
    incubation and its local development
  • Dr.Goldsberg differs from me to say Hahnemann
indeed included itching eruptions of all kinds
which is like a doctrine of herpetism. He is
thus unable to agree that hahnemann based his
logical superstructure of his Psora-Theory upon
    the distinct entity Scabies

12
Contd.
  • Now we know about scabies.
  • But to condemn or ridicule him for it is a gross
anachronism. We forget that modern doctrine of
    scabies dates only from 1844.
  • But when we look beneath the surface of his
doctrine, It rests upon the broader ground of
morbid diathesis and especially upon that form of
it associsted with cutaneous disorder which has
led the frnch pathologists to speak of a DIATHESE
    HERPETIQUE OR DARTREUSE.

P.32-35
13
Scabies
  • It was along time before the followers of
Hahnemann, influenced by his mistake in
connecting chronic diseases with the itch
    eruption.
  • Scabies is purely a local disorder, produced by
    the presence of an Acarus.
  • Scabies cannot be cured by internal remedies
alone., and those who claim cure might have been
    mistaken in their diagnosis.
  • Externally Sulphur ointment Oil of Lavender
    (Jahr)
  • Internally Sulphur, Croton, Sepia.

14
Contd.
  • Translate Hahnemanns Psoric now into these terms
into Scrofulous and you have the substance of his
thought which is absolutely true and of utmost
    importance.
  • It was for therapeutic purposes he has arrived at
it, by giving us wealth of new remedies of long
and deeper in action. Compare the use of Sulphur
and you will see what we have gained by it.
  • We must regret he had incorporated his hypothesis
    in Organon.

P.32-35
15
Contd.
  • So in reading Organon let us determine to ignore
it, or to translate its language in the way I
have suggested We shall then do justice to the
    main argument of the treatise.

P.35

SYPHILIS
  • In contrast to Hahnemann he describes syphilis
according to its pathological stages as i)
    Primary ii)Secondary iii) Tertiary syphilis
  • The word Syphilitic Miasm is not used
  • However the terms Anti-Syphilitics and
A-Syphilitics are used as the remedies for
    Syphilis
  • He quotes indefinite no. of authors references in
the treatment of syphilis including Hahnemann,
    Bahr,Jahr, Yeldham, Mayerhoff, schneider, Madden,
Parker, Laurie, Chapman, Shaw, Rilliet, Drysdale,
    Dudley Wright, etc

P.319-332
17
Contd.
  • Says decillionth potency as 30th.
  • Criticize hahnemanns use of Mercury in the early
    years and later years.
  • Mercury has no essential similarity with
    syphilitic poison.
  • It acts as a liquifacient on the indurated
indolent glands of syphilis ie., by its
    physiological action.
  • I must think that those given by hahnemann in his
later years (higher potency) in its primary stage
is simply NIL.it is an imperfect after
    observation

Therapeutics of 20 Syphilis
  • Rash, Sore throat, Iritis, Fever, Chloro -
Anemia, Rheumatoid pain to all this Mercury is
strikingly Homoeopathic and should be employed
persistently for its cure. (intermediate doses as
    well)

    Hughes)

P.323-325

Therapeutics of 30 Syphilis
  • Tertiary Syphilis only set as a consequence of
improper use of mercury. Tertiary symptoms are
not seen even in a single case under homoeopathic
    treatment (Bahr)
  • Iodide.,Kali-Iod., Aurum., Mez., Phos., Phos.ac.,
Staph., Sil., Fl.Ac., Nit.ac., Guaicum., Sulph.,
Ars., Graph., Lyco 12 with cod liver oil
  • Advice material doses
  • Presents a case of tertiary syphilis with
following drugs in succession is been given Ars
TDS for 3days Bell QDS Ac.nit BD for 1 week
and OD for two weeks Aur.mur OD for 3weeks
Sulph 6 occ. Hep.S few doses Ars intervals of
    3 or 4days.

P.325-330

SYCOSIS
  • I will follow Hahnemann in giving Sycosis a
    separate place from syphilis.
  • Acuminate Condyloma(mucous papilloma) has
nothing to do with syphilis and is caused by
irritation of skin and mucous membranes with
    different secretions esp Gonorrheal pus.
  • Gonorrhea is divided into two. Acute and Chronic
  • Considers gonorrhea as purely a disease entity
  • The term Sycotic miasm is not been used.

P.330-333
22
Therapeutics of Sycosis
  • Acute Gonorrhea Acon., Gels., Cann.sat., Canth.,
    Merc.sol., copaiva., Thuja., Petroselinum., Apis.
  • Chronic Gonorrhea Thuja followed by Nit.ac.,
    Zn.mur., kali.iod., sil 6., Matico 1X., Sepia
30., Sulph., Nux.V., Ferr., Gourlards extract.,
    Hydrastis.

P.330-333

Therapeutics of Sycosis
  • Chancre sprouts as condyloma or a mucous patch
    Merc., Nit.ac., Thuja
  • Tubercles after Chancre Lyco
  • Fig-warts (Sycosis) Cinnbar, Nit.ac., Staph.,
    Thuja., Ac.phos.,
  • Simple Condylomata Thuja 30
  • Gonorrheal Rheumatism (It is due to the
constitutional effect of the virus) Acon
Puls., Saras., Thuja., and criticize the abuse of
Salicin treatment and its after effects.
  • Gonorrheal Opthalmia it may have
  • 1.a constitutional effect of the virus
    Internal treatment alone Aconite., Puls.,
    Clematis(iris)., Merc.cor.,Hep.Sulph.,
  • 2.a eye affection only Silver nirate
application and internal if it is not resolving
    in 24 hours.

Evaluation and Discussion
VE
- VE
  • Added other medicines to Sycosis Syphilis
    acc.to stages of pathology
  • First person attempted to modify the terms miasm
    or psora as morbid diathesis
  • Attempted to update pathology in homoeopathy
according to his study and experience
  • Confidence in oneself Boldness to tell what he
practiced and hence not a blind follower of
Hahnemann so that became a true disciple.
  • It was a materialistic study and hence
    superficial and confused
  • It is a partial study as many things in chronic
    diseases regarding suppression, direction of
    cure, anamnesis, constitution and temperament
    etc. were not highlighted
  • Did not made attempts to explain miasms in depth
and criticize it on pathological (allopathy)
basis and terms used in that time.
  • Not willing to commit himself in saying Hahnemann
    had fore visions.
  • Inability to realize higher potencies and their
    good effect in chronic diseases
  • Diluting the concept of Individualization
