Title: Chapter 9 Test

1
Class Topics
Title Biology 3/20/07
Objectives
  • To assess learning about the historical
discoveries surrounding the genetic material, DNA
as well as its structure and replication.
  • Chapter 9 Test
  • Chapter 10 notes
  • RNA
  • A moments insight is sometimes worth a lifes
    experience.

Class Assignments
By When
What
  • Chapter 9 Test 3/20/07
  • Read 208-214 3/22/07
  • W.S. 10.1 3/22/07
  • Due this class period
  • Due next class period
  • Due in the future

3
Grade Sheet
2A p. 157 (5 pts.)
4
Pretest Activities
  • Move seats

5
Posttest Activities
  • Hand in exam
  • Pick up W.S. 10.1
  • Read 208-214
  • Work on W.S. 10.1

6
RNA
  • Ribonucleic Acid
  • Carries out the instructions coded for by DNA
  • Differences between RNA and DNA
  • Ribose is the sugar
  • Single stranded
  • Uracil - not thymine - bonds with Adenine

7
Types of RNA
  • Messenger RNA
  • mRNA takes DNA instructions to ribosomes
  • Transfer RNA
  • tRNA brings amino acids to ribosomes
  • Ribosomal RNA
  • rRNA makes up a part of each ribosome

8
Protein Synthesis
  • Proteins are manufactured on ribosomes
  • Proteins are made from polypeptides
  • Polypeptides are made from the 20 amino acids
    (monomer of protein)
  • The order and number of amino acids determines
    the proteins properties
  • DNA determines the order of amino acids because
    its the template

9
Genetic Code
  • Language of instructions for DNA and RNA
  • Only 4 letters (ACTG)- yet 20 amino acids
  • Is it read in groups of 1, 2, 3, or 4?
  • 41
  • 42
  • 43
  • 44

10
(No Transcript)
11
Codons
  • DNA is read in groups of 3 nucleotides - called a
    codon
  • Each codon represents an amino acid
  • AUGGGGUUUCACACUUGGUGA

12
Protein synthesis (Steps)Transcription
  • 1. RNA polymerase attaches to DNA
  • 2. RNA pol. causes DNA to separate into 2
    strands (unzip a short length)
  • 3. DNA makes mRNA (transcription)
  • mRNA complementary bases attach to DNA
  • 4. mRNA leaves nucleus - through nuclear pores

13
Protein synthesisTranslation
  • 5. mRNA travels down ER to area of ribosomes (or
    out to free-floating ribosomes)
  • 6. Ribosome (rRNA and protein) moves along mRNA
    translating the message
  • 7. tRNA brings appropriate amino acid to mRNA (at
ribosome) - peptide bonds formed between amino
    acids
  • Appropriate amino acid determined by codon

Virtual Cell Animation
14
Protein synthesis
  • 8. tRNA leaves amino acid
  • 9. Protein released
  • 10. mRNA breaks apart

Test Taking TipsGuessing and the ACT
  • Random and educated guessing

17
Test Taking TipsMeaning of Multiple Choice
  • Only answers matter
  • Youve already got the answers
  • Tips
  • Read the questions
  • Come up with answer in your head first
  • Eliminate answers
  • Read all choices before choosing
  • Educated guess
  • All of the above, none of the above
  • Positive choice is more likely than negative
    choice

18
Test Taking TipsPacing
  • Set a target score
  • 31
  • 90 right
  • Have to get through the test
  • 20
  • 60 right
  • Answer slower
  • Check clock occasionally, know amount of time per
    question

19
Test Taking TipGeneral Tips and Strategies
  • Preparing
  • Reducing Test Anxiety
  • When you get to the test
  • Before you turn in your test
  • Essay tests
  • Multiple choice tests
  • Problem solving tests
