Control
  • Internal vs. External locus of control

6
Control
  • 5 Styles of Distorted Thinking
  • FILTERING You take the negative details and
magnify them while filtering out all positive
    aspects of a situation.
  • OVERGENERALIZATION You come to general
conclusion based on a single incident or piece of
evidence. If something bad happens once, you
expect it to happen over and over again.
  • MIND READING Without their saying so, you know
what people are feeling and why they act the way
they do. In particular, you are able to divine
how people are feeling toward you.
  • CATASTROPHIZING You expect disaster. You
notice or hear about a problem and start what
ifs What if the tragedy strikes? What if it
    happens to you?
  • PERSONALIZATION Thinking that everything people
do or say is some kind of reaction to you. You
also compare yourself to others, trying to
determine whos smarter, better looking, etc.

7
Control
  • Five Beliefs That Will Not Cause Problems
  • Everyone doesnt have to love me.
  • It is ok to make mistakes.
  • I dont have to control things.
  • I am responsible for my day.
  • I can be flexible.

8
Commitment
  • Hardy individuals are committed to a set of
    personal values
  • What are yours?

9
Commitment
  • Methods to identify your personal values
  • Imagine that you have been given a medical
diagnosis that will allow you to live for six
months with relatively good health. What
activities would you fill your time with?
  • Imagine your funeral. How you like to be
described? What will you be known for? Who will
    speak at your funeral?
  • Imagine that a 60 minute camera crew has followed
your movements in the last week. How would the
reporter summarize what appears to be most
important to you based on how you spend your
    time?
  • What do you consider your greatest
accomplishments thus far in your life?

10
Challenge
  • View life and change as a challenge, not a
    threat.
  • Bring it on attitude.
  • Comfort Zone and Pinky Therapy.
