2Objective
The communicative English program
Aims at developing integrated linguistic skills,
with an emphasis on listening comprehension and
oral production. Learners develop their language
skills through individual practice, communication
and collaboration.

CFRD
CFRD is a technologogical center for innovating
pedagogical practices using ICT, funded by a
MECESUP UCO-109 project.

Team
9The English Online team is made up of highly
qualified ESL teachers and native language
assistants led by the program Director professor
Emerita Bañados.
10Language Assistants
Native speakers of English periodically work with
us leading conversation classes and helping
record some audiovisual materials.
11Highly Qualified Technicians
Multimedia, audiovisual and distance education
technicians develop and implement the interactive
materials written and designed by the EFL
teachers in the online platform.
12Video Recordings
Technicians from our university TV channel film
the videos for the online course led by EFL
teachers.
13Native speakers who have participated in the
video and audio recordings come from different
cities including Dublin, California, Minnesota,
Colorado, Texas, Michigan, Indiana, etc.
providing a variety of English accents for
linguistic input.
14International Professors
Fulbright Scholars and experts have visited and
made valuable contributions to the program.

Program
16 Independent work with the online software
Students are encouraged to develop their learning
autonomy. They work at their own pace with the
online software for about 5 hours a week. They
come from different majors such as engineering,
chemistry, dentistry, law, journalism, business,
medicine.
17Face-to-face classes with EFL teachers
Students enjoy taking part in different types of
communicative situations during their
face-to-face classes with their EFL
teachers/tutors.
18Conversation classes with native speakers
Every week learnes have one hour session of
interaction with native speakers, where they
practice the language and learn about the foreign
culture through fun communication activities,
games, and simulations.
19Global community
Several students that come to UdeC to study
Spanish become participants of the program global
community. They share with students and
collaborate with the program while they are on
campus and continue communicating through CMC
when they leave to their hometowns.

21Online tutoring for personalized feedback
Every week students submit course assignments to
their personal online portfolio to be assessed by
their tutors. They check marks and tutor comments
on a personal progress report.

23CMC tools used in the course
Students use discussion forum, voice chat,
personal messages and message board
functionalities to communicate with the local and
global course community.
24L2 Input and Output
Students intensively practice listening
comprehension and speaking skills online through
tasks which maximize opportunities to produce and
focus on output by means of specially created
recording tools, which allow learners to interact
with video characters and send their recordings
to their online portfolios to get feedback from
their teacher/tutor.
25Other functionalities
Students write a weekly online diary about their
progress and impressions of how they are
learning. They also register the vocabulary they
learn in each lesson in their personal vocabulary
book.
