2Introduction Project Goal
- Our goal is to make the presentation of the
Environmental Pledge developed by our class a
tradition during freshmen orientation and to
instill a sense of environmental responsibility
in students from day one at Rhodes by showing
them that our campus is working towards a
sustainable future.
3Project Objectives
- Development of Environmental Action Plan
- Raise concern for and awareness of sustainable
practices on campus - To incorporate the Environmental Pledge our class
has developed into the Rhodes community - Show freshmen that Rhodes students are concerned
with environmental issues from day 1 - Freshman Orientation as a vehicle
- PAs, RAs, ERs
- Provide freshmen with information about
involvement and opportunities at Rhodes
4Method Teamwork By joining forces we will show
freshman that the environment is a priority at
Rhodes!

5Results Ideas for Implementation
- I. Packet
- II. Discussion
- III. Move-In
- IV. Sibling Project
- V. Entertainment
6Orientation Packet
- Incoming students will be provided with
information on the following topics
Glossary of Environmental Projects at Rhodes
Ways to be Pro-Active
The History of Recycling at Rhodes
Rhodes Bike Program
Public Transportation To and From Rhodes
Other Great Ways to Recycle
What Can We Recycle at Rhodes?
7Suggested Discussion
- We plan on having PAs and ERs go through the
environmental brochure that will be placed in
their orientation packet with their freshman
orientation group. Hopefully this will initiate
discussion about sustainable practices at Rhodes.
During this discussion the pledge will be
introduced and initially presented in hopes that
students will sign it. - Our hope is that RAs will go through a similar
process with their residents at the first meeting
in the fall as well as throughout the year.
8Environmental Pledge !!
9Presentation of Pledge
- The pledge is voluntary
- It will be available online for students to sign
at their own will and convenience - First presented during orientation, but hopefully
there will be multiple opportunities during
semester (at RA meetings from ERs, Earth Day,
Paint Your Box Day, Community Week, etc.)
10Move-In Ideas
- Have designated space for cardboard boxes to be
recycled - Make aluminum recycling available outside during
move-in
11Sibling ProjectPaint a Box!
- Use boxes from move-in
- Give siblings an activity to do while parents and
students are busy - Siblings will decorate recycled boxes as a gift
for freshman - Boxes will be used as recycling bins in
individual rooms
12Entertainment
- By incorporating environmentally related issues
pertaining to life on campus into entertainment
events for first-years during orientation, we
hope to reinforce that Rhodes students are
environmentally conscious
CUP Show
Freshmen Movie
13Mission Possible!Discussion
- It our hope that incorporating concern for the
environment at Rhodes and beyond will change the
practices on our campus and greater community - By using orientation as a method, we expect that
4 years from now (when next years freshman are
seniors) the whole campus will have an
environmentally conscious mindset
