Title: NYSERDA Data Center Efficiency Programs
1NYSERDAData Center Efficiency Programs
- NYS Forum
- IT Greening Conference
- April 30, 2009
2What is NYSERDA?
- New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority - Public benefit corporation
- Established by the New York State Legislature in
1975 - NYSERDA is tasked to address the States energy
environmental challenges
3EEPSEnergy Efficiency Portfolio Standard
- 15 x 15
- 15 energy consumption reduction by 2015
- NYSERDA Program
- 93 Million over 3 years for Industrial and
Process Efficiency electricity savings.
Includes - Manufacturing
- Data Centers
- 840,000 MWh savings goal
4Industrial Process and Data Centers
- Similar load shape
- Process-oriented
- Economic development impact
- Mission critical
- Load growth potential
5IT Sector in New York State
- Represents significant load, particularly
downstate - LBNL Study Found
- NY DC Energy Use 4.50 Billion kWh/year
- NY DC Energy Costs 594 Million/year
- NY DC of Tot. NY CI Electric Use 5.89
- IBM Research shows
- IT energy expense will grow 35 in next 5 years
- US DCs consume more electricity than the
country of Mexico - 100 units of energy production yields 3 units of
productive computing
6Data Center Approach

8FlexTech Technical Assistance
Objective Provide cost-shared engineering studies
- Feasibility Studies
- CFD Modeling
- Thermal imaging
- Applications management
- CHP/Renewables
- Energy Advisor Consulting
9Flexible Technical Assistance (FlexTech)
- Project starts with a phone call to NYSERDA
- Customer chooses from one of 35 engineering firms
under contract with NYSERDA - NYSERDA pays the engineer 50, Customer pays the
remaining 50
Technical Assistance
- Customer submits a 3-page application and
detailed scope of work - Customer uses their own engineer
- Customer pays the engineer and NYSERDA reimburses
customer 50 upon approval of a final report - FUNDING 50 Cost share up to 1 million over 5
years
10Performance-Based Incentives
- Incentive is paid based on verified energy
savings (0.12/kWh upstate, 0.16/kWh in Con
Edison) - New construction or existing assests
- 50 of project costs up to 5 million per project
- All projects require a detailed engineering
analysis to determine savings - Large projects require MV
- Incentives for energy saving process improvements
- Based on energy use per unit of data processed
before and after improvement
