The Reason for a Smokefree workplace

• Inhaling other peoples smoke is a known cause of
  ill health
• Around 750 people die each year as a result of
  being exposed to second hand smoke
• Many more have their health impaired

As a business we have a duty of care

• To our staff
• To customers
• To visitors

The Smokefree policy is not about whether
people smoke but where they smoke

• No smoking in the building
• No smoking in entrances to the building
• No smoking close to the building

• Non compliance by staff can lead to disciplinary
  action
• Non compliance by customers can lead to the
  refusal of service
• Non compliance by visitors can lead to being
  denied access to site

What can you do?

• Inform customers of the new policy and remind
  them that it is the law
• Ask them not to smoke near our building
• Offer information about the reasons for the no
  smoking policy

Workplace Studies

• UK (pop 56 m) 750 deaths estimated as a direct
  result of second hand smoke
• Finland (pop 5.1 m) 236 deaths estimated as a
  direct result of second hand smoke
• New Zealand (pop 3.8 m) 270 deaths from heart
  disease and lung cancer

• 7,500 miscarriages are caused by maternal smoking
  each year
• Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals
  80 of which are known to cause cancer
• Women smokers reach menopause earlier and their
  children are seven times more likely to smoke

  smoking induced illness
• 51 smokers have recently tried to give up

  in smoking it that harm is done

Stopping The Rule of 3

• Craving lasts 3 minutes

• Missing the habit lasts 3 weeks
• The majority of those who quit for 3 months will
  quit for life

• Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), such as
  patches or gum, doubles quit rates
