• The problem There is an unknown cause of female
  infertility.
• Attempted for year to become pregnant
• Long interval between menstruation
• Suspect problem w/ ovulation
• Goals Stimulate ovulation with drugs
• Drugs
• clomiphene citrate
• For women w/ infrequent cycles and long cycles

Treatment Regimen

• Begin between 2nd-5th day of menses
• Patient to take 1 or 2 tablets (50-100mg) every
  day for 5 consecutive days
• Can induce menstrual cycle w/ progesterone
  injections or progestin tablets.
• Pregnancy test before inducing

Drug Action

• Name Clomid, Serophene (Clomiphene Citrate)
• Target Cells Estrogen receptors in the
  hypothalamus
• Cellular Response Anti-hormone, competitive
  inhibition
• Effect Block estrogen receptors in hypothalamus
  to cause increased release of GnRH, LH, and FSH,
  leading to increased estrogen and ultimately
  ovulation.

Effect of reproductive state

• Effective
• Early in cycle (2-5 days of menstration)
• Can induce period (progesterone)
• Not Effective
• Times other than above
• Women who cannot cycle
