• Dominant mechanism for transport of coarser
  sediment (sand, gravel and cobbles)
• Caused primarily by littoral drift.

• Formed by littoral transport
• Point in direction of transport
• Oftentimes they occur in places where coast has
  not reached equilibrium.

• Caused by alongshore convergence of transport
• In Puget Sound, they often relate to a change in
  the dominant wave direction
