Grade 5 Guide to Quotations
2
What are Quotation Marks?
  • Quotations are another person's exact
words--either spoken or in print--used in your
    own writing.

3
When do you use them?
  • You can use them when you are writing about
dialogue (conversation) or to use another
persons words to add to your own writing.

4
How do you use them?
  • 1. You should use a set of quotation marks to
enclose each direct quotation (the exact words)
    included in your writing.
  • Example Mr. Meldrum replied, Im sorry, but I
dont believe that your dog ate your homework.

5
How do you use them?
  • Use a capital letter with the first word of a
direct quotation of a whole sentence. Do not use
a capital letter with the first word of a direct
quotation of part of a sentence.
  • On page 7, DuPrau described Mayor Cole as a
grumpy man and she states that his face, rarely
moved, except for making the smile that was on
    his face now.

6
How do you use them?
  • If the quotation is interrupted and then
continues in your sentence, do not capitalize the
    second part of the quotation.
  • If you dont stop talking to each other, the
teacher said, you will have to spend recess with
    me.
  • It is extremely important, he said, jabbing his
finger at the class, for all workof Emberto
be done. To be properly done.

7
What punctuation do I need to use?
  • - You should use a comma directly before a
    quotation.
  • - The punctuation at the end of the sentence
always comes inside the quotation marks.

Thats all I need to know, said the bunny.
Thats easy!
