What Constitutes the Americas?

• The Americas constitutes a shared geographic
• space designating not only the neocolonial,
• political and economic empires of the United
• States and Canada, but also taking into
• account the Caribbean and Latin America.

What Do We Mean By African American?

• This course challenges the assumption that
• black experiences in the United States offer
• the most dominant signifiers of blackness
• outside of the African continent and argues,
• instead, that black experiences in the
• Americas have to be understood as part of
• historically and culturally interdependent
• processes.
