National Patient Safety Goal Suicide
Prevention
  • Joint Commission requirements
  • 1. A Risk Assessment identifies factors that
    may increase/decrease the risk of suicide
  • UCH Nurses perform a suicide risk
    assessment and take steps to ensure safety
  • Psychiatry can be consulted for further
    assessment and recommendations

  • Joint Commission requirements
  • 2. The hospital addresses the patients
    immediate safety needs and most appropriate
    setting for treatment
  • 3. The hospital provides suicide prevention
    information to patients at discharge
  • Contact UCH Social Workers for discharge
    planning resources for suicide prevention

Psychiatric Resources at UCH
  • Psych/Social Liaison Team is available in the
    Emergency Department (24/7)
  • Psychiatric Consult/Liaison Resident is available
    for Inpatient Consultations
  • Psychiatry is available to consult on complex
    cases if acute condition exists

Residents Role Responsibilities
  • Residents are not responsible for conducting
    Psychiatric Risk Assessments
  • Residents are not responsible for writing 72 hour
    Mental Health Holds (27-10)
  • Residents may assess Decision Making Capacity if
    a patient is refusing care/treatment and decision
    making capability is in question

Decision Making Capacity
  • The Decision making Capacity Assessment Tool is a
    form with instructions (available in your
    Resident packet)
  • The medical care team is responsible for
    identifying conditions contributing to incapacity
  • Assess patients ability to make a medical
    decision based on factual understanding of the
    illness prognosis

Decision Making Capacity
  • Assess etiology of incapacity (example delirium
    versus psychosis)
  • Concurrent mental illness doesnt negate decision
    making capacity
  • A Psychiatric Consultation may be requested if
    acute symptoms of a mental illness are affecting
    decision making capacity
