Title: THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE 1947
1THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE 1947
2The Nobel Prize in Physics 1947
- "for his investigations of the physics of the
upper atmosphere especially for the discovery of
the so-called Appleton layer"
Sir Edward Victor Appleton (United Kingdom)
3The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1947
- "for his investigations on plant products of
biological importance, especially the alkaloids"
Sir Robert Robinson (United Kingdom)
4The Nobel Prize in Literature 1947
- "for his comprehensive and artistically
significant writings, in which human problems and
conditions have been presented with a fearless
love of truth and keen psychological insight"
André Paul Guillaume Gide (France)
5The Nobel Peace Prize 1947
American Friends Service Committee (The Quakers)
Washington, DC, USA
Friends Service Council (The Quakers) London,
United Kingdom
6THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE 1947
GERTY THERESA CORI, NÉE RADNITZ USA
(1896-1957) 3rd woman to win the Noble prize.
CARL FERDINAND CORI USA (1896-1984)
- "for their discovery of the course of the
catalytic conversion of glycogen"
7CORI CYCLE
The Cori cycle is their explanation for the
movement of energy in the bodyfrom muscle, to
the liver, and back to muscle.
8Bernardo Alberto Houssay(Argentina)
(April 10, 1887 September 21,1971)
- "for his discovery of the part played by the
hormone of the anterior pituitary lobe in the
metabolism of sugar"
9- Carbohydrates produced from food or liver
- Used by muscles
- Production and consumption of carbohydrates-Consta
nt blood sugar level - The liver
- Hypoglycemia when liver is removed
- Hyperglycemia-the liver diminishes or ceases the
production of sugar, and stores it.
10- The pancreas secretes insulin in adequate
quantities so as to maintain a normal blood sugar
level, and the blood sugar level regulates the
amount of insulin secreted. Thus hyperglycemia
increases the secretion of insulin and
hypoglycemia diminishes or completely inhibits it.
11- He found that hypophysectomized dogs were
hypersensitive to the toxic and hypoglycemic
action of insulin - These discoveries stimulated the study of
harmonal feedback control mechanisms which are
central to all aspects of modern endocrinology.
12Outline
- Carbohydrate metabolism and other metabolic
processes are regulated by the balance maintained
between the secretion of several endocrine
glands. - Diabetes and other metabolic diseases are a
disturbance in this endocrine equilibrium.

14- Due to the body's ability to hold no more than
around 2,000 kcal of glycogen, marathon runners
commonly experience a phenomenon referred to as
"hitting the wall" around the 20 mile (32 km)
point of a marathon. (Approximately 100 kcal are
utilized per mile, depending on the size of the
runner and the race course.) When experiencing
glycogen debt, runners many times experience
fatigue.
