11System Interface
- No change to GCOS 8 Native I/O
- Conversion to FCP done in Callisto
- Unit to LUN mapping for Disk
- CKD to FBA disk format
- Count Key information eliminated
- No change for Tape
- ESCON written tapes can be read through FC

12Unit to LUN mapping
- GCOS 8 disk addressing is at Unit level
- SCSI (FCP) addressing is at LUN level(i.a. UNIX
Logical Unit Number) - The LUN size will match the Unit size but the
data format is different

15Configuration Management
- G8CM V3
- ESCON channels (HPIA and PCI-ESCON)
- Performance enhancements
- G8CM V4
- Fibre Channel (IOSP)
- Boot File Replace (IOSP)
- G8CM V5
- PCI ESCON and FC VMF Shared Channels (IOSP)
- Versions 4 and 5 will continue to coexist
16Configuration Considerations
- Up to 32 LC per physical channel for FC
- G8CM V5 only intended for VMF users with PCI
ESCON or FC Shared Channels - The IOCDS file is used to control unshared ESCON
I/O configurations - A Full Set IOCDS file (IOSPCDS) is required for
Fibre Channels and Shared channels - Used by VMF to validate HOS/GOS configurations
(ESCON and FC) - SP Load into IOSP for Fibre Channels
- Used by IOSP for FC control

HOS Configuration ( CONFIG,FILES)
Virtual System Configuration ( VMEC.CFG )
GOS Configuration( CONFIG)
GOS Configuration( CONFIG)
18Configuration Considerations (2)
- Single configuration G8CM versions use the
concept of CCI - Configuration Component Identifier
- G8CM V5 introduces the concepts of UCI (Universal
Component Identifier) andCentral System - The Central System is a collection of VMF HOS/GOS
configurations - The UCI is used to uniquely identify a device
used in more than one configuration - The VMF VMEC file will be managed and generated
by G8CM (V5)

21IOSP Software Architecture
22ASD Evolution vs. FC Evolution
- A Disk Subsystem is ASD or Non-ASD
- A Disk Subsystem is ESCON or Fibre Channel
- With larger and larger disk drives, ASD evolution
becomes inevitable - Number of Units/Drive per Subsystem
- Number of Logical Devices to manage
- Moving to ASD can be as simple as rebooting with
MALFC devices but.. - Addressing above issues, only by using variable
size MALVC devices - Defining MALVC devices implies data migration
- FC evolution also implies data migration
- These migrations can be done in one or two steps
- DMM can help in both cases
23Migration Considerations
- ASD evolution while remaining ESCON
- New data migration when moving to FC
- FC Subsystems are ASD only
- Possible simple All MALFC configuration
- Extra disk space benefit
- Migrating to FC is more than channel swap
- A logical copy utility has to be used to move
data from ESCON S/S to FC S/S - FMS Save / Restore or FAS
- DMM CLONE directive
24Migration Considerations (2)
- Disk FC connections use CDA 8400/8700
- CDA 8400/8700 are ESCON and FC
- New 4-port ESCON directors
- Mixed ESCON / FC IOSP channels and CDA Adaptors
are possible - In summary the following migration items should
be considered - SR5.1
- Disk Subsystem consolidation
- Fibre Channel evolution
- Evolution to ASD
25Evolution Scenario 1
- Keep ESCON connections
- SR5.1
- Possible Disk S/S consolidation
- May need extra diskspace when going FC later
- Possible ASD evolution
- simple or more elaborate
- Use DMM to ease migration
- Possibly use 4-port ED for connectivity
- A new data migration will be needed to go FC
26Evolution Scenario 2
- Move to Fibre Channels
- Total or partial
- Possible phased introduction of FC subsystems
- SR5.1
- Disk S/S consolidation on CDA 8400/8700
- ASD Evolution
- Simple or more elaborate (preferred)
- May start with selected applications on test S/S
- Use DMM to ease migration
27Callisto 2 Benefits
- Performance first
- Higher Connect rate
- Increased Throughput
- Reduced response time
- Increased formatted Disk Capacity
- Up to 23
- A step towards SAN integration
- Availability
