Environment
  • Geocaching uses the Global Position System to
find a hidden "cache", which might be placed
anywhere in the world. The locations of these
geocaches are given as latitude and longitude
coordinates and posted on the Geocaching Web site
at www.geocaching.com . These caches can be found
by locating the coordinates using a GPS unit (an
electronic device that can find your approximate
    location on the planet).
  • Math 4.1.6 Write tenths and hundredths as
    decimals and fractions
  • Students will be taught how to read the
    coordinates which involves understanding
    decimals.
  • Science 4.6.1 Evaluate the effects of technology
on people and the environment. (Use of a GPS)
  • Science 4.6.2 Explain how an invention may lead
    to other inventions
  • (Compass to GPS) S. Studies 4.2.8 Explain the
significance of Lewis and Clark expeditions
(compare and contrast their navigational tools to
    GPS)

  • Use our Senses
  • Introduce children to the beauty of the world. We
need to look, listen, smell, and touch nature to
experience its wonder look for plants, animals,
and insects, listen to the wind and water, and
    smell the tree bark.
  • In small group activities, each child could have
a specific task or responsibility. For example,
in groups of three you might have a photographer,
a log book keeper, and a GPS user. They can trade
responsibilities so they all get a chance to
    participate.

Language Arts 4.3 Writing Once back in the
classroom, students will write an explanatory
paragraph on their geocaching experience. S.Studie

initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching
community. Since 2002, geocachers have been
dedicated to cleaning up parks and other
cache-friendly places around the world. Through
these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the
natural beauty of our outdoor resources!

  • Just a short walk along the path will reap the
reward. Lots of parking available. It may be 33
degrees and foggy the day I hid this but it was
still the first day of spring. Time to break out
of the long hibernation and get back to
geocaching, especially since the ticks won't be
out for a little while. Enjoy the dash for the
    cache.
