2
Figured Bass, Continued
  • Triads can appear in three positions
  • Root-position root of triad in bass
  • First-inversion third of triad in bass
  • Second-inversion fifth of triad in bass
  • Figured bass indicates intervals above the bass
note rather than the root of a triad

3
Figured Bass, Continued
  • Inversions of a seventh chord
  • Root-position root of seventh chord in the bass
  • First-inversion third of seventh chord in the
    bass
  • Second-inversion fifth of seventh chord in the
    bass
  • Third-inversion seventh of seventh chord in the
    bass
  • For this course we will only consider inversions
of the V7 (dominant seventh) chord
  • Figured bass works the same when dealing with
inversions of a seventh chord it indicates
intervals above the bass note rather than the
    root of the seventh chord

4
Figured Bass, Continued
  • NOTE when the Dominant seventh chord is
inverted, the seventh of the chord (in this case
the pitch F) is written to the left of the root.

5
Figured Bass, Continued
  • It is customary to abbreviate figured bass
symbols for both triads and seventh chords
  • Abbreviation usually involves implied intervals
    above a given bass note
  • Abbreviated figured bass symbols are still
notated in the same way small Arabic numerals to
the right of the Roman numeral, one over the
    other, largest interval first

6
Figured Bass, Continued
  • Abbreviated figured bass triads
  • Root-position no inversion symbols necessary
  • First-inversion use 6 only
  • The third above the bass is implied
  • Second-inversion no abbreviations

7
Figured Bass, Continued
  • Abbreviated figured bass seventh chords
  • Root-position use 7 only
  • The third and fifth above the bass are implied
  • First-inversion use 6 and 5 only
  • The third above the bass is implied
  • Second-inversion use 4 and 3 only
  • The sixth above the bass is implied
  • Third inversion use 4 and 2 only
  • The sixth above the bass is implied

8
Figured Bass, Continued
  • Root-position 5th and 3rd are implied
  • First-inversion 3rd is implied
  • Second-inversion 6th is implied
  • Third-inversion 6th is implied

9
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • It is important to remember the order of
operations when deciphering and encoding Roman
    numerals and inversion symbols
  • Consider the following example
  • Provide a Roman numeral and figured bass symbols
    as necessary.

10
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 1 reduce to root-position to determine root
    of sonority
  • Stack in ascending thirds
  • Lowest note of rearranged sonority is root

11
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 2 determine the scale-degree of the root
this tells you the Roman numeral of the chord
  • Remember the chord quality maps we have been
dealing with in this course see p. 119 in
    course packet
  • B is the root of the chord, which is scale-degree
5 in the key of E major, so the Roman numeral is V

12
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 3 determine intervals above the bass note
of the given chord these are the intervals of
    the figured bass symbols

13
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 4 can these symbols be abbreviated?
  • 6/5/3 indicates a seventh chord in
    first-inversion, which is typically abbreviated
    simply to 6/5
  • Thus the correct answer for the problem is

14
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Now consider another example
  • Spell the indicated triad or seventh chord

15
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 1 write the triad or seventh chord in
    root-position
  • iv indicates a minor triad with scale-degree 4 as
    the root
  • Scale-degree 4 in F-sharp minor is B, so a
    B-minor triad includes the pitches B, D, and F

16
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 2 determine what member of the triad (root,
3rd, or 5th) is in the bass
  • 6/4 implies that the fifth of the B-minor triad
is in the bass, which is the pitch F
  • Write this note on the staff

17
Skills Review Roman Numerals / Figured Bass
  • Step 3 fill in the indicated intervals above the
    bass
  • Sixth and fourth above F , the pitches D and B
  • Thus the correct answer for the problem is
