What is a Sentence Fragment?
  • Incomplete sentences
  • Pieces of sentences that have become disconnected
    from the main clause
  • Some fragments are not clearly pieces of
sentences that have been left unattached to the
main clause they are written as main clauses but
lack a subject or a main verb.

3
Examples!!
  • I need to find a new roommate. Because the one I
have now isnt working out too well.
  • I need to find a new roommate, because the one I
have now isnt working out too well.

4
More Examples!!
  • The current city policy on housing is incomplete
as it stands. Which is why we believe the
    proposed amendments should be passed.
  • Because the current city policy on housing is
incomplete as it stands, we believe the proposed
    amendments should be passed.

5
In order to be read as a sentence, a group of
words must meet the following two requirements
  • It must contain a subject. It must contain a
    verb.
  • If the group of words lacks one or more of these
elements, in spite of having been capitalized and
punctuated as if it were a sentence, it is a
    sentence fragment.

6
For example
  • Sat down to eat.
  • Sentence fragment has no subject
  • Who sat down to eat?
  • Correct sentence Aaron sat down to eat.
  • The restaurant was too crowded.
  • Sentence has a subject and a verb

7
Just remember!!!
  • A sentence is a unit that has a subject, a verb,
and words to complete the thought. A sentence
fragment occurs when you forget one of these
parts but still capitalize and punctuate your
    words as a complete sentence.
